Consett & District Cricket Club Consett CC 3rd XI v Boldon CA on Sun 24 May 2015 at 1.45
Consett & District Cricket Club Won by 1 wicket

Match report Onto the fourth game of the season and second home league fixture against Boldon CA. Concept would welcome junior wicket keeper Ryan O'Neill for his debut and a return to cricket for Micahel Huntsman after he had spent four years not playing due to work and university commitments.

Not quite such a glorious day as the day before at Blackfyne but still not a bad day for cricket all the same. Captain Cox was to again win the toss and decided based on the make up of his team and strength in depth of his bowling attack that Consett would aim to restrict their opponents to a chase-able score having failed the week before in their attempts to set a winning score at Whiteleas.

So to the first innings, The new ball was to be shared by Murphy and Cook. However the initial best ideas and plans did not quite go to plan. The two openers struggled at times for control and the batsmen were very quick to punish any loose deliveries as they raced to 54/0 after only 9 overs. Many of the team were looking in each others direction wondering who thought bowling first would be a good idea. The tenth over was to finally see Consett on the board. Cook was despatched for his second maximum before a cleverly disguised slower ball yorker was far too much for Slater as he departed for a rapid 32. This was to signal a massive downturn in run rate as a double bowling change saw Waters and Remmer stem the tide, Remmer would strike in his second over as he had Cox well caught be Wilkinson, not before captain Cox had dropped two easy chances at slip of course in his mission to make sure the hosts would chase the biggest score possible... Steady progress again from the visitors as Jubb joined Watson at the crease and they again began to pick up the scoring a little and progressed the score to 113/2 after 22 overs and as drinks were taken give their team an excellent chance of launching to a score of 200+ However drinks signalled wickets as is so often the case as in the very next over Remmer cleaned up Watson for 22 making the score 113/3. With the score at 129 in the 26th Waters would eventually get his first and only wicket as he bowled Carson for 9. Jubb however took this as a sign to open his shoulders as he targeted the shorter long side boundary in hitting both fours and sixes. Remmer and Waters would both complete their over spells and finish with respectable figures, especially Remmer who was hit for only 2 boundaries in his spell. This saw another double change as leading wicket taker Kerswell and Wilkinson would come on to cowl. Kerswell immediately settled into an excellent line and length causing indecision among the batasmen and his second over was a double wicket maiden, the first of which was a smart stumping from O'Neill giving him his first senior dismissal and then bowling Woodward second ball to leave the score 142/6. Spencer combined with Jubb for a partnership of 38 in which Jubb passed his 50 which he brought up with a towering leg side six off Wilkinson however he would eventually aim one big hit too many and Cook took and excellent catch on the boundary off the bowling of Wilkinson to leave the score 180/7. A few overs of just trying to bat out time from the visitors proved fruitless as Kerswell took his third team tally to 13 in 4 games as he took the last two wickets, first Spencer stumped with excellent hands by O'Neill for a patient 18 and then bowling last man Thompson for 0 to finish with excellent figures of 8-2-25-4 and Cosnett with a victory target of 189. The visitors only had ten men but the hosts would still claim maximum bowling points due to bowling out those that had been put in front of them with only two of the overs remaining. An excellent turn around given what had happened in the first 10 overs.

Teas were taken with team Grant again providing plenty of choice much to the annoyance of Cox Jr who had been asked to open the batting and was unable to take advantage of the various cakes on offer. As ever tea was taken with positive chat and hope of a first win of the season which would require beating our previous highest total by some 62 runs. Piece of cake perhaps?

Another new opening partnership was formed as Grant was to open with Cox Jr. This only lasted two balls however as Grant was caught and 'bowled' second ball having failed to trouble the scorers. Some debate as to the legality of the bowlers action had the batsman infuriated but what was written in ink in the scorebook unfortunately was final. Huntsman joined Cox at the crease as they looked to build a partnership. Solid defence mixed with quick running and a fair few extras saw them bat until the tenth over and advance the score to 42 before Cox was defeated by another suspicious looking delivery from Reay to be bowled for a solid 5 made from 39 balls. The runs continued to come at a steady pace before Huntsman was run out for 14 attempting a slight single as he seemed to forget the basics of slide your bat in which may well have seen him make his ground after he had looked relatively untroubled. At 58/3 the game was in the balance. Cook Joined Wilkinson who as ever was infuriating the opposition with some inventive strokes and his willingness to run everything that wasn't hit straight to a fielder. He was however next to go for 20 as he didn't get hold of one off the bowling of Jubb and was somehow held one handed at midwicket by the retreating Jubb. Captain Cox was next to the middle and despite being hopelessly out of sorts hung around long enough to put on 34 with Cook who managed some meaty hits for four and six to see the fielders go on the retreat before Cox was also caught at midwicket mistiming a clip straight into the hands of the fielder having made only 4. At 110/5 there was the worry of the usual collapse at the back of peoples minds. Kerswell was next to the crease but made only 7 before playing a good shot to a short wide one but unfortunately hitting it straight to the fielder at cover point. Cook was to follow a couple of overs later bowled for 40 and with it at 129/7 perhaps Consett's chances had gone. However Remmer was to have other ideas!! He first added 21 with debutant O'Neill as they took the score to 150 before O'Neill gave a catch having made 7 to cap a good debut for him. Remmer continued to bat very sensibly as he combined with Murphy to add another 18 runs before Murphy got over excited having already hit a boundary as he picked out mid on going for another having made 4. So at 168/9 it looked like the hosts might just come up short in the end but who better to send to the crease than the vastly experienced Waters. Surely just the calm head that was needed in such circumstances. Despite a few nervy moments and one or two wild swings and Remmer being dropped with Consett 4 runs short of victory a couple of boundaries saw the scores drawn level before Remmer eventually knocked the winning single through cover to spark jubilant celebrations as the Barmy Army had their first win of the season in what had been a second 1 wicket nail biter at blackfyne that weekend.

Congratulations everyone for a solid team effort and all round performance and well done to Andrew Remmer who I believe was a deserved Man Of The Match on this occasion. Hopefully this will be the catalyst for things to start heading in the right direction for the rest of the season and see the team start to string some wins together!!! Well done lads and see you for our next games on 4th June for Washington away in the T20 cup and then Littleton away 6th June in the league!!
