Consett & District Cricket Club Consett CC 3rd XI v Peterlee Casuals on Sun 22 May 2016 at 1:30
Consett & District Cricket Club Won by 86 runs

Match report The third league game of the season saw the visit of Peterlee Casuals to Blackfyne. Another strong looking 3rd X1 showed a couple of changes from last time out. Season debuts for David Southern, Jonny Bradley and vice captain Jack Marshall in this game as they replaced Matty Kerswell (injured), Nick Cook (unavailable) and Sean Kelly (unavailable).

Uncertainty over the weather at the toss made the winners decision a potentially difficult one. Visiting captain Monk however called incorrectly so home captain Cox decided that based on two previous strong showings with the bat that batting first on a good firm wicket would give his side a chance to bat the visitors out of the game.

Regular openers Jamie and Harry went to the crease looking for a composed start to the innings. Their watchful start lasted 6.3 overs before Grant was the first to go having made only 4 as he was clean bowled by Laidler. This brought Clarke to the crease who had been short of runs in the mauling of South Shields. He was to make up for this today however. Both he and Jamie mixed watchful defence with excellent stroke play and even some impressive running given Jamies efforts on Wednesday for the 2nd X1. They produced a partnership of 83 for the second wicket before Jamie was unfortunately ran out after a mix up saw on his way for an excellent 62 off 81 deliveries which included 7 boundaries and was his first senior half century in a season that has seen him show excellent form with both bat and ball so far. Winn was next to the crease but he struggled to get the ball away and made just 4 before he was caught by Allison off the bowling of Garraghan with the score on 125 in the 29th over. With wickets in hand acceleration was now the key for the hosts as they searched for a total in excess of 200. Wilkinson demonstrated this as he lofted his very first delivery over extra cover for a maximum, however after adding another boundary another mix up saw him well short of his ground as he was run out too having made just 12. Cox came and went quite quickly as he also tried to up the scoring but did nothing but swing at fresh air before belting a full toss straight into the hands of Buck at mid-off. The score now sat at 156/5 with 10 overs to go and the hosts in danger of undoing their hard work shown in the first 30 overs. Marshall went in for his first Sunday knock of the season and pushed the ball into the gaps and ran well as he and Clarke quickly added 24 before Clarke was eventually dismissed for an excellent 78 as he was caught at wide mid-on to an excellent running catch by Nesbit of the bowling of Monk Jnr having hit 8 boundaries and faced 92 deliveries, not so Boring Ben for once you might think! More quick runs were added as Consett demonstrated their strength in depth with the arrival of Pyke at number 8. A rare maximum for Marshall a highlight before he was dismissed in the penultimate over having made a brisk 25 from only 23 deliveries and helped take the score beyond 200. Pyke was to finish the innings 30 not out having hit 5 boundaries from only 19 deliveries faced with Southern the other not out batsman with 2 to his name.
All in all another excellent effort from Consett who for the third game out of three had batted their entire allocation of 45 overs and in doing so posted another competitive score of 226/7. The fact that they have done so three times already this season is potentially some kind of record given many of the batting performances of third teams in the past. Would appear that this one is made of sterner stuff!!

Team Grant as ever provided excellent refreshments in the clubhouse to help energise the players for the effort required to bowl out the opposition to make sure they got the full 20 points on offer for a win!

Pyke and Roe were given new ball duties and Pyke was immediately on the mark. After much debate over who should take wicket keeping duties Grant found himself with the gloves on again with the usually reliable Marshall stationed at first slip. However early inroads were not to be made yet as he spilled a regulation chance off the bowling of Pyke to give Buck an early reprieve. Garraghan was afforded the same luxury in Pyke's second over which looked a worry after he had taken 15 off the opening over bowled by Roe as Cox also put one down at second slip. Roe was to make amends for this in his second over however as Clarke took a relatively easy catch at cover to dismiss Buck with the score on 18 and get Consett on the board. Number 3 Nesbit came to the crease and despite hitting a maximum to the shorter leg side boundary struggled with off side play and his patience eventually ran out as he was cleaned up by a full straight one from Pyke having made 8 with the score on 43. Laidler was to follow soon after for the same score as he edged behind giving Roe his second wicket for one of the few of the day to actually stick in the gloves of Grant. At 66/3 Consett felt they were well in the game. Jamie Bradley replaced Pyke in the attack as a few spare overs from him may have been needed should it get tight at the end of the game. Southern came on for his opening bowl of the season after Roe had claimed a respectable 2-46 after the initial set back of 15 from his opening over. Southern was to show it was a much simpler game than line and length as a filthy full toss first ball was walloped straight into the hands of Wilkinson at mid on which saw captain Monk the fourth to depart with the score on 75. For the second time in the day it was time for the Jamie Bradley show now however as he put the result beyond any reasonable doubt. He maintained an excellent line and showed good variation to first have Robson caught at short mid wicket by Marshall having already survived an identical chance in his previous over having made 16, Monk Jnr was to follow soon after to the same combination having made only 5. Then for some solo work as the previously vocal K Allison was clean bowled without troubling the scorers by Jamie which seemed to please Marshall more than the bowler, lovers tiff perhaps? Then the same again from Jamie saw Longthorne cleaned up for 5 and the visitors pretty much out of it at 112/8 in the 27th over. Whilst carnage had been taking place at the other end, opener Garraghan had compiled an excellent half century which included 6 boundaries but his team mates were now doing little to help him at the other end. Greenfield was next to go as he made just 5 before the Southern/Wilkinson partnership again claim another wicket and leave the visitors 119/9. An entertaining last wicket stand of 21 saw novice T Allison hit his highest score of 14, swinging like a rusty gate may have been heard had the TMS commentators been spectating before he was caught at point by Cox off the bowling of Jonny Bradley with the visitors all out for 140 and the unfortunate Garraghan carrying his bat for an excellent 61.

Another fantastic 20 point win for the 3rd X1. Fielding was generally of a high standard, bowlers stuck to their plans and the majority of the batsmen applied themselves. Another pretty complete performance. Who knows what might be possible should this continue throughout the season. Let's not get carried away however as there is a heck of a long way to go yet. Thanks as always to Julia and Lily for their excellent work with the teas, Rosie for keeping such an immaculate book to allow me to provide such reports and the ground staff for having the field looking in such excellent condition.

As is now tradition it's awards time.
Man Of The Match - Two clear contenders this week. Ben Clarke for his excellent 78 and very welcome return to form but unfortunately for him this wasn't quite the award winning moment today. This instead was given to Jamie Bradley ho had a fine all round match in making 62 with the bat then having excellent figures of 9-2-33-4. And also not forgetting his fantastic athleticism as he chased a ball and slid straight off the top of the hill at the boundaries edge and provided everyone in attendance with a moment of hilarity. Well done Jamie, take a bow!
Dick Of The Day - Not a whole lot went wrong today or not too many obvious candidates. Harry could get a mention for some rather unusual wicket keeping bit as he didn't drop any catches and only had 6 byes he gets way with it. Marshall usually one of the safest pairs of hands in the club is also in contention with 2 dropped chances. However Dick Of The Day this week goes to the captain. 14 deliveries faced for only 2 runs and 2 pretty poor dropped catches means he must take a bow on this occasion and give everyone else a pat on the back!!

Next up for the 3rd X1 is a mid week trip to Kimblesworth in the Bob Langford cup on Thursday 26th in a competition that has been revised from 45 to 20 overs to see if their short game is in as good order as their long one. Then a return to league action on bank holiday Sunday as they play at home again with newcomers Ryton the visitors on this occasion. Keep up the good work lads and lets hope for another couple of wins come the next round of reports to be written about!
