Consett & District Cricket Club Consett CC 3rd XI v Sacriston on Sun 04 Jun 2017 at 1.30pm
Consett & District Cricket Club Won by 3 wickets

Match report Consett's fifth league game of the season saw them back in home action with a game against Sacriston, a team that often seems to be a bogey side for Consett teams at all levels. Four changes from last time out saw Ray (social event), Clarke (1st X1), Pyke (stag do) and Roe (dirty stop out) replaced by Jackson, O'Neill, Kerswell and Smith with the Academicals thankfully not having a game which allowed for these lads to be called upon. Another lovely day for cricket at Blackfyne of which there have been several so far this year saw visiting captain Jones call correctly on a very dry wicket and elect to bat with a usual youthful looking Sacriston side.

In the absence of Roe (to be discussed later), Jonny B was handed opening duties alongside Smith. A steady start from the pair as they kept things relatively tight before Smith would make the initial breakthrough as he had Lowes held by Jackson having made 10 and leave the score 25 for 1. A further 19 runs were added by Jackson and Smith before quite an amazing collapse was about to unfold. Jonny B started things off as he had Smith lbw for 9 before B Jackson followed for 24 in the next over held by Cox at gully off the bowling of Smith leaving the score 44 for 3. It wasn't long before Bradley was at it again as he had visiting skipper Jones held by Wilkinson at cover for 4 (not before he had already dropped his 7th of the season off the same bowler) and leave the score 48 for 4. This was immediately 48 for 5 as Jonny found the Norther Echo ball when he cleaned Hall up first ball and claim his third wicket on his way to figures of 9-0-50-3. Smith also completed an impressive opening burst as he collected figures of 2-10 after 7 very tidy overs. Southern replaced Smith to keep things tidy but the introduction of Kerswell who had been a very late call up make the telling difference. The 6th wicket went down on 61 as Kerswell bagged his first having M Jackson caught by our own M Jackson for 8 at cow corner. He followed this straight up as Wilkinson held his second of the day at cow corner two balls later (not before also dropping his second of the day off Jonny B and his eighth of the season) with the score still on 61 and seeing Kerswell start with a double wicket maiden and the visitors in deep trouble on 61 for 7. Southern was in on the act next over as he picked up the wicket of Ludlow for 0 after the faintest of tickets behind to Horn with the score now 62 for 8. It then wasn't long before Kerswell was at it again as he picked up his third having Clough held by Jamie B for 4 and then finishing off the innings as Jonny B (shock) held Cordner at mid off for 3 as Kerswell collected remarkable figures of 3.4-2-2-4 and Sacriston dismissed for just 72 after electing to bat!

Team Grant as ever provided a fine spread for the bunch of pigs amongst the Consett ranks who all appeared in very confident mood. They were of course warned against complacency as just because they had knocked off 250 last time out it didn't mean that they would just knock off 72 without applying themselves. Of course this is Consett we are on about and why would they do something the easy way when they can make the game far more interesting??

Onto the chase. regular opener Jamie B slid down to number 3 and with Ray missing a new opening combo of Marshall and O'Neill would get Consett underway. However this didn't last quite as long as hoped. Wirth the score on 10 Marshall for the second team this season managed to run himself out having made just 3 and give the visitors a gentle whiff of what might be. 7 more runs were added before a double strike from Clough first saw O'Neill lbw for 6 before Jackson made his second duck for the team since scoring his maiden century in the first game of the season. The score now stood at 17 for 3 and suddenly things were looking interesting. Bradley and Wilkinson added 15 more before Wilkinson became a third victim for Clough after he had made just 4. A rather annoyed captain came to the crease next and instructed Jamie that nothing stupid would be tolerated. The pair were watchful and advanced the score beyond 50. However just as the visitors had started to quieten down a little their skipper introduced himself to the attack. Jamie couldn't help himself a hit his third ball straight to the grateful hands of mid-off with the score on 52 having made a patient 15. Things went from bad to worse as first Kerswell was bowled through the gate second ball and then Smith followed first ball meaning that Jones had opened up with a triple wicket maiden and leave the game completely back in the balance with Consett sat on 52 for 7. Former captain Southern was next to come to the crease and knew what was required. Cox opened up a little and hit a few boundaries as they eased to the target. Southern too added a boundary of his own as the scores edged ever closer before Cox finished things in the 18th over striking a 2 and then a 4 straight back over the top off the bowling of Jones as he finished 31 not out with Southern 6 out out in what had been a nail biting chase for all concerned.

Another win for Consett and 100 points achieved from 100 available but much to be frustrated about from the performance. However it would appear that winning is a habit and it was good to get over the line in the end. Well played Sacriston for keeping it so close and pay attention to some of our younger members who were quick to chirp on in the field but not so quick to back it up with a performance to match their quick wit....

Man Of The Match contenders; Jonny Bradley with 3 wickets at the top of the innings despite going for more than 2/3 of the entire total, Matthew Kerswell for his 4 wickets for only 2 runs but in the end the team decided that today's award should go to the captain as without his unbeaten knock they might not have got over the line. So today's Man Of The Match - Ian Cox
Dick Of The Day today has two part winners for very different reasons. First off we will deal with playing matters. Jonny Bradley for going for such a high percentage of the final total but escaped punishment with 3 wickets and a catch, Simon after managing to drop another two catches but redeemed himself by also holding onto two. However the winner set the tone for the day by being chief protagonist after reminding Smith of the way to the changing rooms upon his dismissal in the first half which lead to an increase in comments made throughout the game and then backing it up by scoring a duck and dropping a catch today's deserved winner is Matt Jackson! However we are to have a double award for the day, as the elder member of the team and former second team captain and man of responsibility it cannot be left unnoticed that the reason our opening bowler missed the game was due to leaving his keys in the club from Saturday night and having not been either home or to bed asked if it was be ok for him to be replaced in the team at 12:20 and thankfully Matthew Kerswell was on hand to replace him at such short notice. Probably the last person on the team we expect to pull an all nighter bit for your outstanding efforts to 'the sesh' an honorary Dick Of The Day also goes to Mark Roe!

Still much to like about this season's progress. Next time out sees the small matter of an away trip to local rivals Shotley Bridge on Sunday 18th June, a game which has been brought forward from Sunday 20th August. Let's hope for a better performance and another positive result to keep going with what has been an excellent season so far. See you all in 2 weeks.....
