Consett & District Cricket Club Consett CC 3rd XI v Ryhope on Sun 15 Jun 2014 at 1:45
Consett & District Cricket Club Lost by 144 runs

Match report Consett's first home league game in Division One saw Ryhope make their first third team visit to Blackfyne (I think). The start was delayed slightly due to some light drizzle and a slightly damp pitch. The captains went out to toss and upon calling correctly Ryhope skipper Swansbury had no hesitation is asking Consett to field first. The wicket was certainly dry enough to start but the outfield was certainly a little damp. Not dangerous though in case anyone thinks i'm belittling any umpires!!!

It became apparent very early that the damp would prove to be a big problem for a lot of the Consett side. The opening bowlers seemed to struggle with a ball that became very much like a big red bar of soap very quickly, a failure to bowl a consistent line and length didn't help matters and gave the opening batsman every opportunity possible to belt it into the outfield and only make matters worse. Kirtley was particularly severe as the visitors raced to 61/0 after only 10 overs. Unfortunately old bat habits had crept back in during this time and the hosts had already dropped 5 catches in this period including a ridiculous run of 3 in 4 balls in one Pyke over. Something which certainly needs to be worked on and was discussed at length after the game. Kirtley raced to a half century bringing up the landmark in only 38 deliveries. Consett continued to toil until the 20th over for their first breakthrough which eventually saw Kirtley chance his arm once too often and be pouched by Bainbridge having made 84 from only 65 deliveries in an opening stand of 115, well batted sir - even if he was given 3 lives....
The middle overs had arrived and Consett eventually started to slow the scoring rate down a little and liven themselves up a bit in the field. Good control from Miller, Kerswell, Bradley and Wilkinson saw the run rate eventually brought down below 6.Kerswell and Bradley were particularly impressive given that they are both young spinners and bowled their entire spells with a wet ball. Wilkinson claimed his first wicket in the 26th over having Liddle clean bowled for 5 and then the patient Tomlin was eventually dismissed in the 32nd over with the score on 157 with Pyke taking the catch and Wilkinson his second wicket the ball after making a workmanlike 50 of his own from 82 balls but he too had three chances during his innings...
Into the final 10 overs and a couple of wickets for Bradley one lbw and one bowled which saw him return excellent figures of 9-0-23-2 and a third for Wilkinson with Bainbridge again taking the catch saw Ryhope reduced to 168-6 and Consett maybe in with a chance of dismissing the visitors for under 200, short lived hope on that one. Stores joined Lawrence and the crease and immediately pressed the accelerator easing to 35 not out off only 29 balls with Pyke coming in for some of the most severe treatment in the final few overs despite picking up the wicket of Lawrence for 19 with the help of a good catch from Grant. Good composure shown from Kerswell as he was reintroduced to bowl the last few overs and did indeed pick up reward for his hard work with the wicket on Groark bowled via the inside edge to finish with tidy figures of 9-0-38-1. Ryhope eventually secured maximum batting points as they passed 200 and finished 224/8 meaning Consett had also failed to take maximum bowling points again, something which had been such a strength last season. The players headed for tea knowing that they had not performed to the best of their abilities and as ever Wilk was on hand to remind them from his usual perch behind the bar and as always he wasn't wrong!!

The standard discussion of taking pride in ourselves in the second half and giving a good show etc took place. Maybe the target was beyond reach but at least try and post a decent score and bat the others. This seemed to have as much effect as usual once the reply had begun - none!!!
Bainbridge and Remmer opened up for the hosts in cautious fashion but lasted only until the end of the third over where Bainbridge was pouched by Tomlin after mis-timing a drive and the score only on 4. Pyke was next up and after a couple of eye catching drives he was next to go inside edging another attempted drive onto his stumps for only 6. The score now 14-2 and a lot of folk fearing the worst. They were indeed correct. Johnson playing his first game of the season made only 1 before becoming Stores second victim to an lbw decision which may have been one of the easier decisions Mr Trotter will make this season. Next up last years POY Wilkinson who looked busy at the crease as ever. He and Remmer managed a 15 run partnership which would turn out to be the highest of the innings before Remmer also mis-timed a drive giving Stores his third wicket and leaving Consett 32-4. Bradley on the back of some fine recent form found himself at number 6 but this wasn't to be his day with the bat as despite a well timed cut shot he managed to find the hands of the fielder with precision rather than the gap which would surely have brought him four and the innings was now in disarray at 33-5. Captain Cox joined Wilkinson hoping to at least take the score to some respectability, however a half tracker which bounced very little put paid to that and Saw Cox on his way back to the pavillion having made only 5 and been bowled giving Stores (who finished with 4-25) his fourth wicket. With the score now 45-7 even a batting point seemed unlikely. Some good running between Grant and Wilkinson and one quite large 6 from Grant saw the score progress a little before Wilkinson found the fielder at cover point with lazer like precision to be dismissed for 16 which turned out to be the top score. Marshall and Miller did their best to hang around in hope of at least one batting point but once Marhsall was dimssed for a dogged 11, Kerswell was dismissed second ball to a smart catch by young Liddle at mid-off and the game was over. Consett had been dismissed for 80 resulting in a 144 run loss and had been outplayed in every department.

Much was discussed after the game and players reminded of the need for a bit of heart and determination for the cause as well as just turning up and having a laugh because losing by margins like this will only stay funny for so long... Hopefully some have taken notice and will take any opportunities available to practice and improve and hopefully just add that touch of professionalism to proceedings that has sadly been lacking so far. League action is away for the next two weeks with us visiting Lintz on 22nd June and a rearranged game at Backworth on 29th June. Hopefully we will see a few of you there to support the team as their quest for a first win of the season continues.....
