Consett & District Cricket Club Consett CC 3rd XI v Littletown on Sun 14 May 2017 at 1.30pm
Consett & District Cricket Club Won by 6 wickets

Match report Third game of the season and a third home game in a row for the 3rd X1. This time the visitors were the nice chaps from Littletown who we had defeated on the final day of the 2016 season to be crowned as Division 2 champions. They had finished third so as a result joined us in Division 1 for the new season.

Ray (family commitments), Pyke (stag do) and Jackson (academicals) were missing from the previous week as Clarke, Cook and Kerswell come in to replace the. The visitors fielded a familiar looking side with their usual danger men present and in need of being contained. Despite the majority of the team sporting magnificent hangovers after the Shotley Bridge wins and ladies day captain Cox thought he would be a good sport and field first on what seemed a pleasant day for cricket.

Roe would be the opening bowler as always and this week he was partnered by Wilkinson. Roe settled into his work as ever keeping tight lines and good lengths, Wilkinson was a little more wayward however. A reasonably untroubled start for the visitors was eventually interrupted by Roe with the score on 36 as Riley was adjudged LBW after a watchful 12. The next wicket wasn't far behind as Roe again keeping to his tight lines removed visiting captain Crowder for no score and meaning Consett had finally taken a grip on the game. Star player Hodgkiss came to the crease at this point. He and Charlton combined to push the score along at a steady rate and survived the occasional scare, Hodgkiss being put down from one of the rare deliveries Bradley got in the right areas after both he and Wilkinson struggled for control and accuracy and managed only four overs each before being removed from the attack. A double change after Roe returned a commendable 2 for 20 from his 9 saw Cook and Kerswell introduced. Both settled into challenging areas and regularly troubled the batsmen. First up though smart work from Winn saw Charlton run out after he had made 35 with the score on 78. This turned out to the catalyst for another as Hodgkiss didn't make the most of his lifeline. Kerswell got one to turn and bounce and Horn did the rest as he departed for 28. A slight recovery took place as Chapplow and Natarajan added 35 but Chapplow became a second victim for Kerswell after making 20 as a big swipe made no connection and he was bowled with the score on 119. Bright was next to go caught behind off Cook having made 10 despite his protests that he hadn't hit it. This would be the beginning of the end for the Littletown innings. Natarajan followed for 23 as he too was caught behind off the bowling of Kerswell, his third wicket and Horn's third catch. The lower order didn't offer much resistance as Kerswell bagged his fourth on his way to excellent figures of 9-1-24-4 with Bradley taking the catch at midwicket to dismiss Siddell. Clarke came on after Cook had bowled his allocation and went with full and straight which immediately reaped rewards. He first got rid of Gowland for 7 and then Muller for 0 first ball, both LBW as he wrapped up the innings to finish with 2 for 7 and see the visitors bowled out for 153 in 39.3 overs.

Early game abuse towards the captain had been forgotten and the team were in much more optimistic mood knowing that they were more than capable of chasing down such a score. Teas were enjoyed as always, thanks to Julia and Lily for their big sandwiches and well done to the fat lads who had way too much as usual. Much talk of no need to panic with a target of just over 3 per over, hard graft and wickets in hand would surely see a win for the hosts.

A message of crease occupation was left as thought for the day as Winn and Bradley strode out to begin the pursuit. Some eye catching early strokes from Bradley saw him race along to 18 but that was as good as it got as he was held off the bowling of Siddell with the score on 20. Winn had been far more watchful against 2016's joint leading wicket taker Crowder but he fell soon after as he was clean bowled by just that man having made only a single and leave the score 24 for 2. Cox pushed himself up the order for once and came in next to join Clarke. The pari initially knuckled down and saw off the opening bowlers without too much alarm. Clarke was struggling for timing but dug in well to see off the new ball. Hodgkiss and Natarajan were introduced, Hodgkiss being his usual mouthy self which is always impressive for a second change Sunday bowler. He retreated quickly enough once he had been deposited to the boundary a couple of times off the bat of Cox. Clarke's patience eventually ran out in the 19th over however as he spooned a catch to Crowder in the covers off the bowling off Hodgkiss having made 21 and leaving Consett 59 for 3 and still with plenty to do. Cook was next up and his arrival marked an increase in tempo from the hosts who still maintained a relatively cautious approach but did what they could to advance the score. The pair took the score to 95 in the 29th over which had them bang on with the rate but Cook then lost his wicket as he toe ended a slower ball from Hodgkiss and was held in the covers by Charlton. Wilkinson was up next and instructed no chances to be given or any more wickets lost. He can Cox combined to race to victory in spectacular fashion. 60 runs were added in just 7 overs despite the recalling of the opening bowlers to the attack, Wilkinson especially playing some fine strokes from the very first ball. Cox was slightly more watchful but did make his second half century of the season during the partnership from 64 balls including 8 boundaries and 1 maximum. They continued on and achieved the winning score in they 36th over winning with almost ten overs and 6 wickets in hand. Quite an emphatic victory and the second in a row against this opposition by the same margin. Cox would finish unbeaten on 57, his second unbeaten score in a row against the same opposition and Wilkinson unbeaten on a rapid 35 from only 20 deliveries.

Man Of The Match in this one had a couple of contenders. Mark Roe with a fine opening burst of 9-2-20-2, Ian Cox with an unbeaten 57 but on this occasion a man who showed excellent control and wicket taking ability to remove the visitors middle order with figures of 9-1-24-4 todays Man Of The Match - Matthew Kerswell
Dick Of The Day is always a delightful affair. Simon avoided an unwelcome hat-trick despite another dropped catch after an eye catching 35 not out, Kieran fielded well despite only scoring 1 but having got off to a flyer and got out to and awful delivery and then bowled possibly the worst 4 overs of his senior career this weeks Dick Of The Day - Jamie Bradley

Despite the loss to Cowgate, Consett sit top of the table with 60 points from 60 after they were awarded the game, An excellent start to the season in which they have already matched the amount of wins they managed last time around in 2014 and currently only 10 points short of their entire haul last time around. The next league fixture sees Consett play their first away game of the season as they make the trip to Kimblesworth to play on one of the areas smaller grounds against the team they pipped on the final day of the 2016 season to the Division 2 title. Before that the local derby takes place on Friday 26th May as the 3rd X1 play host to the Academicals in the Bob Langford cup. Can last seasons cup specialists upset the Division 1 boys? Hopefully not but never rule it out.....
