Consett & District Cricket Club Won 17 runs

Match report Consett CC v Backworth CC 2nd June 2012

Following last weeks dismal display at Seaton Burn Consett 1st X1 returned to Blackfyne for their first home game of the season when Backworth provided the opposition, and in a pulsating match during which the pendulum swung several ways Consett ran out winners by 17 runs.

This win catapults Consett up to 6th place in the league and they can hopefully kick on and force their way into the promotion race.

On a cold miserable day with dampness in the air home skipper Andrew Waters lost the toss and his team were asked to bat first in a reduced over’s (41)game due to the late start.

With Gary Hunter, Robbie Winn and Phillip Mellons unavailable and professional Gareth Breese injured, the Blackfyne outfit drafted in the experienced pair of Neil Burdon and Darren Atkinson plus all-rounder Rob Hasan who had all produced excellent performances in the second team.

The skipper gave Consett a brisk start, 21 runs coming in the first 2 overs before his partner Michael Barnes (4) was caught in the gully driving at opening bowler Stubbs, and when Callum Barnes (5) was snapped up at slip the home side had slipped to 30-2.

Waters continued his aggressive style while new partner Burdon took a more measured approach and the pair took the score past 50 before Waters (38) skied a pull shot to the wicket keeper and then Atkinson was bowled by Stubbs for naught leaving Consett in a spot of bother at 55-4.

Andrew Forster joined Burdon and they did exactly what was required as they slowly built the score in a watchful way adding over 50 before Forster was ran out by a direct hit for a valuable 24.

Powerful hitter John Chapman failed to open his account as he drove a return catch to Singh and it was left to Hassan and Burdon to propel the innings. The young Hasan chanced his arm and with a bit of good luck managed a quick 16 before he found long on with another big hit.

In the final overs Burdon and Remmer cleared the rope and the hosts finished with 145 for 7 after their allotted overs with Burdon undefeated with a valuable 44.

With damp conditions, a slow outfield and a competitive score the home side were hopeful that they had scored enough.

Opening bowlers Kevin Hopps and Mark Dixon were much tighter than last weekend with Dixon taking a wicket with his first ball and Backworth were immediately on the back foot.
Professional Singh joined Minto and they began to fight back with good sensible batting, waiting for the bad ball mixed with sound defence.

Remmer replaced Dixon and Singh took a liking to him cracking 3 boundaries in his first 2 overs before Waters turned to left arm spinner Callum Barnes and seamer Hasan.

Singh passed 50 and the visitors looked set for victory until he pulled a Barnes short ball to Remmer at deep mid on, and next over tempted Minto to drill a full toss to long on where Hasan took an excellent catch.

The home side were now back in the game and Hopps and Dixon were recalled with immediate effect. Hopps with 2 and Dixon with 1 wickethad Backworth reeling at 104 for 6 with 10 overs left.

The visitors rallied again to need 20 off 5 overs before Dixon produced the defining over with a triple wicket maiden to all but clinch victory.

With the returning Remmer who was finding more rhythm and pace soon rattling the last mans stumps, Consett had pulled off an exciting victory to claim maximum 20 points.

Dixon had excellent figures of 5 for 36 backed up by Hopps 2 for 30 and Barnes 2 for 24.

The game had shown that Consett now have depth in their squad with players fighting for places and will go into next weeks big match against league leaders Ryton with a new found confidence.
