Swalwell v Consett & District Cricket Club Consett CC 3rd XI on Sun 19 Jun 2016 at 1:30
Consett & District Cricket Club Won by 5 wickets
Match report
An early set back which saw team member Jonny Bradley sustain a season ending injury the previous day meant that Consett would travel to Swalwell with only ten men. A dodgy forecast also meant that bowling first was the way forward as heavy rain was forecast from 6pm. At the toss Cox called incorrectly but much to his surprise Dumighan elected to bat that meant any slight chance of victory was very much possible.
Onto the Swalwell innings. A steady start was made by Hodgson and Ridden against tight opening bowling from Roe and Cook with an unfortunate dropped chance by Pyke off the bowling of Cook not ideal. 10 overs were safely negotiated before Hodgson pushed to mid wicket where Cox picked up and threw down the stumps to see Ridden ran out by some distance having made 10. Wilkinson replaced Cook and he and Roe kept things extremely tight as Swalwell struggled to score at any pace and the next wicket to fall would be that of Hodgson for 27 which left the score 44/2 after 20. The highly talented Dumighan was next to join youngster Whitfield at the crease, he began watchfully but just as he looked to get going a sharp return catch by Wilkinson saw him removed for 12 and a youthful batting line up to be exposed. Wilkinson was in the action again as he picked up his third wicket bowling Hall for 1 on his way to fine figures of 9-1-22-3. Next it was over to Bradley to work his magic and he did just that. Wilson-Barlow was his first victim caught by Marshall having made only 2 and leave the score 71/5. Taylor combined with Whitfield to move the score onto 100 before he fell for 20 becoming Bradley's second victim again caught by Marshall and four balls later Stamper was to follow for a duck as Bradley had his third victim this time caught by Wilkinson which saw Bradley record 9-2-24-3. Whitfield was currently resembling a wall of defence but starting to run out of partners. The introduction of Marshall saw him bag the wicket of Dixon caught and bowled for 1 with the score on 104. 11 further runs were added before a rare wicket for Grant saw McIntosh depart for 4 even more unlucky to have been held by Winn. Just one more to get and it wasn't long in coming as Marshall had his second caught and bowled of the innings removing Cox for 0 to finish with 2-10 and see Swalwell all out for 116. Special mention to Whitfield who came in at number 3 and carried his bat for a determined 32 not out and certainly looks like a very promising star for the future.
At tea Consett were as ever confident of chasing down a modest target but their main concern were the clouds in the distance starting to loom large. Cox reckoned maybe only 20 overs might be possible to chase down the total so caution could not be the approach.
A disastrous start saw Bradley dismissed in the third over having made 0. Cook came to the crease full of attacking intent but after walloping 19 off his first 7 deliveries one shot too many saw him perish from his 8th as he was caught leaving the score 24/2. Due to Wilkinson hiding in the toilets a reshuffle saw Cox next to the crease but before he could establish a partnership Winn was the third wicket to fall with the score on only 26 and Consett in danger of throwing away the game never mind getting in ahead of the rain. Marshall was next to the crease as Wilkinson was still enjoying a sit on the throne. He and Cox added 28 taking the score on to 54 before Marshall played one shot too many and was the fourth man of the innings caught having made 19. Wilkinson was finally ready to make an appearance and he and Cox added 30 in 5 overs as they opted for tipsy run against a youthful fielding side to get the run rate going before Cox was bowled playing a big drive to Taylor and getting nowhere near it leaving the score 84/5. 33 were still needed and one or two spots of rain were in the air as Pyke joined Wilkinson with the instructions of just go for it. Pyke had a look for two balls then went for it and combined with Wilkinson they knocked off the remaining 33 in only 14 balls having been told they had only one more over to get them at the start of the over in which it was achieved die to the rain becoming heavier and the skies darker in what proved to be a nail biting win against both the opposition and the weather!!
Man Of The Match - Contenders of Jamie Bradley with for 24, Mark Roe bowling 9 very tidy overs for only 19, Ian with 25, Jack with 19, 2 wickets and 4 catches, but Man Of The Match could only be one man with an unbeaten 26 off 20 balls and figures of 3/22 a very well deserved award for Simon Wilkinson!!
Dick Of The Day - Only really one contender for this one today, turned up sorting a superb hangover, dropped probably the easiest catch of the season at gully, bowled 4 overs for 25 to help Swalwell make a game of it and then expertly slid himself further and further down the order every time a wicket fell, big congratulations Sean Kelly!!
