Peter Remmer 21st January 1941 – 18th May 2024

It is with Great sadness we share the loss of a long-time supporter and friend to Consett Cricket Club “Peter Remmer”. Peter, as you all will know was the father of a previous loyal servant to Consett CC Neill Remmer and the above photo is father and son together in happier times.

Peter leaves behind his beloved wife Betty of 60 years, son Neill and daughter Alison as well as Grandchildren Andrew, Fern and Ross and extended family members. Peter and Betty received their Telegram from the King just before Peters passing which marks a huge milestone in their lives and an achievement very few people have achieved in their lifetime.

Peter supported and followed Neill’s career from under 13 at Consett right the way through to appearances for the league representative team, Durham County under 16, under 18, under 21s and their Second X1 as a young man, and Peter negotiated his spell of “Missionary work” for a short few year at Burnopfield CC as club professional.

Peter spent many hours at the Hope Street ground watching his beloved cricket (as a true Yorkshireman would) and was a loyal member to both the club and the “Cow Shed Mafia” as some of the senior past players and servants to the club were affectionately known.

(Named so due to the location of the cutter sheds at the field near the scorebox back in the day, with its corrugated tin roof resembling a cow shed) in which the said supporters would gather to avoid the rain and take shelter from the biting Consett wind. The said “Cowshed Mafia”, would gather there and give both home and away teams “constructive criticism” on their performances whether they wanted it or not. I’m happy to say we still have some founder members with us, still following their club regularly on Saturdays.

Peters “Betta Bedrooms” van was a regular site at the junior matches alongside the dear “Freddy Forsters” Bedford Rascal van (The Tudor crisp man as he was affectionately known locally). There was once even a slight altercation between the two vans at Chopwell cricket club, (Peter wasn’t in his at the time) but no harm done and not a crossed word between them.

For many years at first team matches, Peter would watch the bowling partnership attack of David Jackson (Jacka) and Neill (Tufty) Remmer, take teams apart, with Neils rapid Left arm over the wicket and the “flight and gile” of David deliveries from the opposite end which was the downfall of many first teams in the Tyneside League much to Peters Pride and pleasure.

It is with sadness as we say goodbye to another pillar of our cricket community and our thoughts and prayers are with Peters wife and family. RIP “Pete”
