Bill Quay v Consett & District Cricket Club Consett CC 3rd XI on Sun 09 Jun 2013 at 1:45
Consett & District Cricket Club Won by 44 runs
Match report
WIth captain Cox on holiday it was over to Davey Southern to re-acquaint himself with taking the reins in the third team as their league campaign saw them make a visit down to Bill Quay. He slipped back into the role with ease and guided Consett to a 44 run victory in a run fest on what was described as an immaculate batting track on one of the league's smaller grounds. He fitted into the role of captain perfectly by losing the toss just as Cox has done on all but one occasion so far this season! Upon doing so Bill Quay asked Consett to bat first in glorious weather and perfect batting conditions perhaps not predicting the fireworks that were to follow.
A disasterous start saw opening batsman Turnull dismissed in the opening over for 2. Maybe Bill Quay were right? This brought Dan O'Sullivan to the crease making his first appearance in a few years but he apparently has not lost his touch. He and Bainbridge restored order with a second wicket stand of 61 in 14 overs before Bainbridge was dismissed for a patient 26. Next man Burlinson was only to last 2 balls before being victim of a run out for 0 leaving the visitors 67/3 and in danger of producing their usual collapse. This brought captain Southern to the wicket who produced a breezy 19 before being bowled and leaving Consett 89/4. Next up was the ever energetic Wilkinson and this was to prove to be the catalyst for the fireworks that were to follow, he and O'Sullivan were to share 67 in 10 overs before O'sullivan was eventually dismissed for a classy 68 in the 30th over leaving the visitors 156/5 with 15 to go. Nick Cook was next up. He and Wilkinson were to add 45 in only 4 overs before Wilkinson was to depart for an excellent 58 from only 43 balls. Cup hero Johnson was next to come but unfortunately he could only last 2 balls before being dismissed for 0. It was left to Dom Scott to support Nick and they were to add 73 in just 7 overs before Dom fell for 14. By Now Nick had the ball disappearing to all parts. He was eventually dismissed with the score on 293 in the 44th over for an outstanding 77 from only 37 balls including 7x4's and 6x6's. The innings was eventually wrapped up with Consett having posted an imposing 300 all out, their highest score for some years in league play in the HLSCL.
At tea Bill Quay were left to ponder whether or not asking the visitors to bat first had been the right idea or not but maybe they had just as much firepower in their line up and it was to prove a close run contest?
It was to prove a close Contest! Against regular opening pair Cook and Southern Bill Quay were able to reach 67 inside the first ten overs before losing their first wicket. This only provoked more aggression from the home side and saw them race to 129 for 2 by the end of the 15th. Alarm bells were ringing amongst the visitors. However the introduction of 14 year old spinner Dom Scott that would swing the game back in the favour of the visors as in tandem with Wilkinson he was to stem the flow of runs and assert calm back into proceedings. Despite going for 18 from his first 3 overs Wilkinson would eventually finish with impressive and match best figures of 9-3-24-2 for a superb all round and man of the match performance and young Scott would bowl a very tidy spell of spin for figures of 9-2-37-1. Once these two had finished the match was still in the balance to a degree as Bill Quay had advanced to 172 from 30 overs however they had now lost 6 wickets and all of their momentum. Number 8 batsman Sweeney was then to provide some late fireworks in a desperate bid to win the game hammering 74 in double quick time but was sadly lacking the required support and between Burlinson and the two opening bowlers Consett were able to close the game out without too much more alarm and see the visitors close on an also very impressive 256/8 but not quite as impressive as the 300 amassed by the visitors only a few hours earlier.
Consett were to take 19/20 points on offer and extend their unbeaten start to the league season to 5 games having taken 95 from a possible 100 points so far. League action now takes a break until an away trip to newcomers Tantobie on 30th June but friendlies at home to Durham Ladies on 16th June and away at fierce rivals Shotely Bridge on 23rd June should keep everyone interested. It would be hoped as many of you as possible can come and show support at both of these games and cheer on a team with very realistic ambitions to bring silverware to the club for the first time in over a decade. Especially the game this coming Sunday so we can show the Durham staff what a fantastic club we have on their visit! See you all Sunday and again, well done lads!!
