Match report For the second season in a row Consett had progressed relatively easily to a cup quarter final. This time their opponents involved an away trip to Philadelphia on a sunny Wednesday evening against the team currently lying second bottom in divison 2. On paper it sounded like an easy win for Consett but as we all know things are never as simple as they seem! Captain Cox called correctly (for once) and chose to bat first on what looked a potentially tricky surface owing to a full days torrential downpour on the Monday. This theory was to be true as the visitors found timing the ball especially difficult on a very slow and low surface which was a far cry from the usual road like batting paradise you would usually expect to find.

None of the players ever really came to grips with the difficult surface and some excellent bowling and fielding from the home side which was reflected in the fact the highest partnership was 24 which came for the 7th wicket between Johnson who would top score with 18 and Cox who laboured to 6 having never got the ball off the square. Wickets fell at regular intervals and Consett even failed to use up their allotted overs as they were skittled in only 18.5 a massive crime in itself. 4 players reached double figures which were Bainbridge 13, Cook and Southern who both made 10 and the aforementioned top score of 18 from Johnson. Hero of the previous round Wilkinson was unfortunate to be given out stumped having only made 5 and this may well have proven crucial in Consett's pursuit of a challenging total.

At half time there was still a firm belief of victory with the team recalling their encounter from earlier in the season where they had won their league fixture despite having only totalled 102 and then going on to win by 17 runs. However they were going to need to better this and bowl them out for less than the 85 they made on that occasion.

They were to give it their all in the field and produced one of their finest efforts of the season to date. However it was to prove in vein. All 5 of the bowlers used produced consistent lines and lengths and were backed by fielders who threw themselves in front of everything that came their way. Despite 3-17 from Southern, 2-19 from Miller, 1-14 from Wilkinson, 1-15 from Bradley and 0-18 from Cook the hosts were to reach their target 8 wickets down with only 4 balls to spare. They owed much of this win to an excellent contribution from Clydesdale who made a brilliant 35 from only 34 balls which was no mean feat in the context of such a low scoring game as he was the only player all game who appeared to find any ease in playing shots and timing the ball before he was brilliantly ran out by Bradley following a diving stop at short cover and throw to the keeper. He shared what proved to be a vital 35 run partnership with Ross after the home side had found themselves percariously placed on 47/6 in the 13th over. Ross was to add 15 before being bowled by an excellent slower ball from Miller but unfortunately by now the scores had already been tied. The drama of a close in field and more tight bowling saw a few deliveries played and missed before Teasdale was eventually the man to hit the winning run in somewhat fortuitous fashion with a sliced drive just clearing the sprawling Burlinson at cover.

Bitter disappointment for Consett again at the semi final stage but again a case of the what might have beens. Had we only batted the overs out may we have had enough to win it, what i the stumping had not been given. All small margins and fine lines but unfortunately luck was not on our side. Now back to league matters heading into the final league game of the season where only a full 20 point victory at whickham on 18th August will do in the sides quest for the league title and even then they must rely on Bill Quay dropping 3 points from their remaining games which hopefully they will be good enough to do when they face up to Wansbeck on the same day. We all live in hope and would love to provide our supporters and players who have trailed around the north east this season something to all cheer about and celebrate at the end of the season.
