Consett & District Cricket Club Consett CC 3rd XI v Shotley Bridge on Sun 31 Aug 2014 at 1.45
Consett & District Cricket Club Lost by 9 wickets
Match report
The final game of season 2014 saw title favourites and eventual winners Shotley Bridge make the visit to Blackfyne. This game was to prove no different to pretty much every other game the third team had played this season and end in a heavy defeat. A strong looking side or so it seemed won the toss and batted and yet again failed to deliver as they were dismissed in only 26.5 overs for 93. This could have been even worse had Shotley not dropped 3 catches in the slip cordon early on. Some good bowling by the visitors and some appalling shot selection by a handful of the home batsman made sure tea was taken early yet again.
Shotley had no problems in knocking the runs off for the loss of only one wicket in 21 overs. The one wicket was down to fortune more than anything as Andrews top edged a big hit and was superbly caught by Davison at square leg. A couple of catches were dropped and the usual misfields thrown in meant these mirrored many other performances this season and saw Consett take 0 from a possible 20 points from the game in a season which has seen them come crashing back down with a bump after last seasons double winning achievements.
In fact the team managed only 2 victories all season across league and cup and will need a massive improvement for next season. Many factors have contributed to this like the constant unavailability of players and the apparent lack of interest amongst others, a sentiment I have no doubt would be mirrored by the other senior captains at the club. As it stands it would appear that the season will have ended in relegation but that will need to be confirmed at the next league meeting depending on if any teams drop out or new ones join up.
All in all a disaster of a season results wise but good to see a few new juniors getting involved who will hopefully be just as keen as we aim to have a massive improvement for 2015 whichever division it is we will be playing in. Let's just hope these folk stay interested and work hard on their game in the winter in order to be ready for the next season!
