Match report
Second league game of the season saw Consett travel to new arrivals to the league, Whiteleas. A much improved facility from the tales given by groundsman Keith the previous day of when it was Harton welfare. A third team debut saw a full family affair as Alan Davsion came in for his first game alongside sons Mattie and Harry and a first appearance of the season for batsman Ste Turnbull.
Cox won the toss for the second week in a row much to his own surprise and decided on a change of approach and would see his team bat first on this occasion. Again the orders given out were that of a game of patience and attempt to make full use of the 45 overs on offer. Unfortunately this was not to be the case yet again. Grant joined Marshall at the top of the order for the first time and the pair started with caution on a wicket that seemed to favour staying low. Grant was first to go however after making 6 as he was bowled by Dance. Marshall showed patience again or was maybe just struggling due to the effects of alcohol? Who knows.. He was next to go for 10 however as he was caught off the bowling on Corner Jnr. The first of the Davisons, Mattie joined Turnull at the wicket but he made only 4 before being clean bowled by Corner Jnr. Turnbull had looked in no trouble as he progressed to 21 but he was to become the first of Ullah's 3 victims as he was bowled for 21. Again the top order hadn't really given the best of platforms for those lower down as the score stood at 45/4 after 15. Cox joined Talbot at the crease as they added some quick runs before Talbot was caught off the bowling of Corner giving him his third wicket for 15. Cox soon followed for the same score adjudged lbw for 15 as Ullah picked up his second wicket leaving the score 75/6 after only 20 overs. Southern received sarcastic applause after managing his first runs of the season having been dismissed for successive golden ducks but was soon on his way for 4 as Ullah picked up his third wicket and the score now on 81/7. Alan Davison at least showed some resolve as he and Kerswell progressed the score beyond 100 before Kerswell became the fourth victim for Corner as he was clean bowled for 15 with the score on 105. More experience to the wicket as Waters teamed up with Davison and Alan was indeed to hit the only 6 of the innings as he spanked Wilkinson into the car park but the bowler was to have his revenge soon after as he pinned him lbw for 16. Last man Harry Davison joined Waters and they did at least guide Consett to a second batting point when they took the score past 125 but Waters was out soon after stumped off the bowled of Ingoe for 8 and Consett dismissed for 127 having used only 32.1 of their possible 45 overs. A few made starts but no one could go on and make that decisive big score.
Tea was taken and quite a sterling effort had been made to provide a good feed for all. Was 127 enough? No one was quite sure as it was a first encounter against the opposition. However it was to prove to be about 70-80 runs short of a decent total.
Home captain Corner Snr opened the batting with Crews and a watchful start saw them take the score to 21 after 10 overs after tight bowling from Harry Davsion and senior pro Waters. However chances seemed few and far between. The introduction of Kerswell seemed to inspire the hosts to up the run rate and despite the teams leading wicket taker mixing up his pace and flight showing good variations the pair seemed largely untroubled. Unfortunately Consett had by now gone extremely flat in the field and the signs of encouragement and support had almost disappeared much to the annoyance of the travelling support who were very vocal on the side lines and did not hide their disappointment. With this however concentration appeared to dwindle as several run out opportunities were missed and 5 catches went down, not all of them straightforward but to risk a cliche, catches win matches. It took until the 20th over for Consett to finally make a breakthrough as Southern snook one through the defences of Crews in his first over dismissing him for 36. Renewed hope? Apparently not, instead the home side continued to accelerate as Ullah joined Corner Snr at the crease and they added 56 to take the hosts to the brink of victory before one of the several chances given by corner was snaffled by Alan Davsion to give son Harry reward for his tight bowling in his second spell. Formalities done not long after as Ullah was to finish 30 not out capping a fine all round performance from him and Amin's only action was to aim a lusty blow over midwicket bringing up the winning runs with a maximum as the hosts achieved their target for the loss of only 2 wickets with 13.1 overs to spare.
Much to think about for those who turned out and maybe worry about as a much changed team will take to the field for the game on bank holiday Sunday at home vs Boldon CA due to players being away and some even more foolishly wanting to attend a potential relegation party at SJP. Fingers crossed for a turn in fortunes or it could end up being another long and painful season which we all hope does not happen to be the case!!
