Consett & District Cricket Club Consett CC 3rd XI v Washington on Sun 19 Jul 2015 at 1.45
Consett & District Cricket Club Lost by 8 wickets
Match report
A home game against Washington was next on the agenda for Consett who had lost a fixture away against the same opponents earlier in the season in the T20 cup and were hoping to finish the season honours even. Unfortunately that wasn't to go to plan as Consett turned up seeming to think that they were still playing the same format in what should have been an affair that lasted 45 overs a side when in total only 42 overs were used between the two teams despite there being a large crowd in attendance with there being a christening on upstairs in the bar.
Consett won the toss and elected to bat first having had success in doing so on previous occasions throughout the season. Again another top order collapse was in evidence as the hosts were quickly reduced to 19/3 with Grant (4), Huntsman (0) and Mattie Davison (0) the wickets to fall. Marshall and Cox added a rapid 43 in 5 overs to get things moving in the right direction before Cox played one shot too many and was bowled for 24 to make it 62/4. Any hope of a continued revival evaporated quickly as the next 5 wickets fell for 10 runs as Marshall departed for 30, Alan Davison (0), Andy Remmer (0), O'Neill (1) and Smith (2) before a spirited last wicket stand of 24 between Murphy and Roe before Roe was last out for 3 with Murphy becoming only the third man into double figures finishing 17 not out. The final total of 96 was all the more frustrating given that the hosts had used only 15.3 of their available 45 overs leaving many questions to be asked and heads to be scratched.
Despite taking the early wicket of Singh for 1 who was run out in his follow through by Nathan Smith with the score on 12 the visitors showed a disciplined batting display as Hardy and Pickering added 77 for the second wicket before Pickering fell victim to the 'spin' of Marshall and even more remarkably was held by Cox having made 21. Daly joined Hardy who passed 50 just after and helped the visitors make serene progress for the rest of the innings as Hardy would eventually finish 62 not out and Daly 2 out out as they passed their victory target in the 27th over having lost only two wickets.
All in all possibly the most disappointing display of the season for the Barmy Army but with the players still as enthusiastic as ever then there is much hope that this will all come back together in a strong performance in the next game away at Mitford on August 2nd. Thanks to team Waters for their efforts providing the teas which had the novelty of being consumed in the changing rooms for a change and thanks to SSBW for doing a sterling effort with the book in the absence of Rosie!
