Shotley Bridge v Consett & District Cricket Club Consett CC 3rd XI on Sun 18 Jun 2017 at 1.30pm
Consett & District Cricket Club Won by 6 wickets
Match report
Sixth league game of the season and just the small matter of a trip down Durham Road to The Spa Grounds to take on a team called Shotley Bridge... The 1st and 2nd teams had both already been victorious over the same opposition and the 3rd team so far had a perfect 100 points from 100. Could they keep up with the fine start and match the efforts of the two Saturday teams? We would soon find out.
A roasting hot day with temperatures around 30 degrees (yes really) provided the perfect spectacle for a day on the drink for those spectating and hopefully put on a show for them by those playing. Consett were buoyed by the news that Shotley captain Alex Elliott was serving a ban and would miss the game. Cox called incorrectly and Golightly had no hesitation in batting first to which Cox was the only man not to disappointed with the outcome. Plenty of options for bowlers as Roe was back in, Burlinson playing his first game of the season after injury, Cook returning to the team and Ray coming back in too, Jackson, O'Neill, Kerswell and Smith all returned to duty for the Academicals.
Burlinson and Roe would share new ball duties and apart from the occasional wide served up very tight lines and lengths which set the tone for the day for the Consett bowlers. Runs would prove very difficult to come by from the off for the Shotley batsmen before M Golightly was somewhat unfortunate as he was first to go in the tenth over having made 6 as Roe got one to pop and he was held by Southern at gully. Gibson followed soon after for 12 when he was smartly stumped down the leg side by Horn giving Roe his second wicket and leaving the hosts 29 for 2 in the 12th over. Burlinson took a spell having produced an opening burst of 6-2-11-0 with only a wicket missing from a good burst. He was replaced by Jonny B who settled straight into a nagging line and length with both him and Roe keeping things tight. Collingwood and Archibald were quite watchful and they produced an innings high partnership of 28 before the introduction of Jamie B reaped immediate rewards as he had Archibald lbw for 9 with only his second delivery and making the score 57 for 3. Slow progress continued as the Bradley brothers both kept things tight with no bad ball available to relieve the pressure. This eventually told as Collingwood went for a big drive and was bowled by Jonny after he had top scored with 21 to make the score 69 for 4. This was soon 69 for 5 as Jonny again cam up with the good as he bowled A Golightly for 0. Thoughts now turned to keeping the hosts to under 100 if possible and with these two giving very little away it was a very realistic possibility. Shoofly's day was summed up with the score on 76 as Nesbit played one to mid-off and set off for a Run only for ray to pick up clean and throw down the stumps leaving Nesbit several feet short of his crease. Wilkinson would follow straight after as he popped a catch to Southern at short cover off the bowling of Jamie having made only 3 and the score now 76 for 7. Jonny finished his spell with figures of 9-3-26-2 and was replaced by Southern. He went for a couple of early boundaries before recovering well to capture his man as he trapped Telford lbw for 10. It was then over to Jamie B to wrap up the innings as first he bowled Thorpe after he had made 7 and then removed Tomlinson second ball for 0 to wrap up the Shotley innings with the score on 95 in the 35th over and saw Jamie record tremendous figures of 8.3-4-6-4 and maybe glimpses of 2016 were to return after all this time.....
The the squad down at Shotley did an excellent job on feeding the Consett pigs who as usual performed miracles when balancing improbable amounts of food on one paper plate... As much as they were happy with their bowling efforts, which could have been better if it wasn't for the 20 extras given up to boost the home sides total, there was still slight apprehension knowing that Shotley would give this quite a fight.
Jamie had hurt his knee whilst fielding which made him even less mobile than usual so vice-captain Marshall put his hand up to open the innings alongside Ray. Ray was in ever belligerent mood as he belted Collingwood for 12 off the opening over and really set the tone for the cause in hand. 8 off the second over meant Consett were already a fifth of the way to their total. Another boundary for ray followed but his joy was short lived as Collingwood got revenge as a full delivery clattered into the stumps with Ray gone for 16 and the score on 24. Cook was next to the crease and quickly into his stride as he hit two further boundaries off Collingwood who was promptly removed from the attack after his two overs yielded 1 for 24. More good shots followed but it wasn't long before Shotley were on the board again. Cook edging one onto his stumps off the bowling of Brown after making 15 to leave the score 43 for 2 after 6 overs. Scoring rate was never going to be an issue but hope of no almighty collapse and calm heads were required. Wilkinson joined forces with Marshall and set about doing what he does best by irritating the life out of the opposition and putting pressure on them in the field. He and Marshall added 26 before Nesbit got his man and had Marshall caught by Collingwood after he had made 21 and done a good job of seeing off the new ball. Jamie B was next up in an unfamiliar role at 5 and quick singles weren't the order of the day. Combined with Wilkinson they eased any further nerves as they took the score to 88 before the introduction of A Golightly was too tempting for Wilkinson who was excellently caught by Brown running in from deep cover. Cox strode out and played a spectators role as first Jamie drove on straight for four before being encouraged to finish it in style by Archbold and duly obliged as he spanked the last ball of the over for 6 over long off to seal the win for Consett as they chased down their target in just 19 overs.
An excellent win for Consett which was celebrated with some loud chanting and singing from the changing rooms lead by the ever vocal Jonny B. An excellent all round performance with bat, ball and in the field and apart from the extras count an impressive all round performance which has now seen Consett achieve 120 points from 120 available.
Man Of The Match candidates, only one real standout this week as he did the job with both bat and ball. He tore through the batting order on his way to figures of 8.3-4-6-4 and then struck the winning runs on his way to 20 not out in the reply, it's nice to have you back. Well done Jamie Bradley!
Dick Of The Day seems to be a foregone conclusion already at this early stage in the season. On a day when not many did much wrong this man managed to drop his 9th catch of the season and then proceeded to have a right old wives hand bag fest for ten overs with the opposition wicket keeper. Basically awarded for being the biggest one on the field our Dick Of The day is Simon Wilkinson!
Next up is an away trip to bottom side Marsden. Regular captain Cox has bottled it and is away on a stag do so vice-captain Marshall will be in charge for this one with the assistance of Wilkinson as the team look to add to their already impressive points total with a day out at the seaside. Best of luck chaps....
