Match report The 2018 season for the Academicals started away to Ryton on a very cold Sunday Afternoon. Personnel changes included Stephen Horn ,Mark Roe and Davey Southern joining the ranks instead of Ryan O'Neill, Nathan Smith and Matt Jackson, raising the age of the team but giving valuable experience. Philip Hunter returned to the fray after a season out with injury.
After our new captain, Ian Atkinson lost the toss, we were asked to bat by Ryton. After our first two years this would have been a bit of a concern as batting has not been our strength but no worries. Phil Hunter and Neil Williamson opened and the first wicket did not fall until 62 was on the board. Neil out for 26. The captain came in at three and the score was past the hundred when Phil was out for a well crafted 39. Ian continued on th achieve the first fifty of the season and was finally out for a hard hitting 66. With Stephen Talbot and Harry Davison hitting 16 apiece and Davey Southern contributing 6 not out we amassed a very impressive 212 for 5 at the end of the 45 overs. A great effort.
10 man Ryton began their reply asfter tea. The two openers got off to a good start until Harry Davison bagged his first of the season with a plumb lbw. His 7 overs going for a mere 22. Ryton's Wood continued to hit the bad ball for boundaries and they were well in the game until the pensioner replaced Harry. His first ball was sent to the boundary and his second,an even worse delivery, went up in the air so high that it came down with snow on it to be plucked out of the sky by Neil Williamson. Cheers!!! Luckily his second over was more on target with Wood missing a one to be given out lbw and the next batter being bowled. Mark Roe chipped in with one near the end of his spell and we were well on the way. Davey Southern took 2 wickets and with a run out we closed in on victory. We were denied the last wicket until the skipper came on to bowl our last victim to cap a great day for him and the team. A GREAT START.
