Marsden Academy v Consett & District Cricket Club Consett CC 3rd XI on Sun 03 Aug 2014 at 1:45
Consett & District Cricket Club Lost by 8 wickets

Match report Having won two games in a row and hopefully turned a corner Cosnett made the trip to the coast to take on table topping Marsden. Unfortunately this would see the rails come well and truly off and see Consett come crashing back down to earth with a bump!
The Barmy Army handed debuts to promising under 13 stars Harry Davison and Matthew Dodd and both were to give an excellent account of themselves showing both the enthusiasm of youth and that the future is bright as far as the younger junior teams are concerned!
Captain Cox won the toss and decided batting was the order of the day, unfortunately Consett were just not up to the task. Disciplined bowling from the home side and some slightly ill disciplined batting at times saw Consett bowled out for just 71 in 28.5 overs, again failing to make the most of the 45 overs available. Matthew Kerswell was to top score with 20, again an encouraging sign from out junior contingent. The only others to reach double figures however were Chris Bainbridge with a workmanlike 16 and Nick Cook who could not repeat last weeks heroics as he made only 11.

An early wicket gave Consett a glimmer of hope that something might be possible as Davey Southern clean bowled Crews for a duck but this was as good as it would get. Cox was to drop Cairns when he had made only 8 with what should have been a regulation take at mid-wicket and Matthew Dodd put down a difficult chance despite a great effort at mid-off in the next over. The score could have easily been 17/3 at this point and who knows what might have been. Unfortunately serene progress was made towards their small target but at least one positive as Harry Davison was to pick up the wicket of Cairns for 42 with Southern taking a good catch which was just reward for his first bowl in senior cricket as he sent down 5 overs of tidy seam bowling. Sadly Marsden reached their target two overs later with captain Corner unbeaten on 28 and Cosnett making the long drive home with only a single point from 20 on offer.

Next week sees the team head for their last away game of the season at Washington who are currently bottom of the table so hopefully and excellent chance of securing a victory that could possible cement first division status for next season. This game will see the policy of youth retained with Mattie Davison set to make his debut and younger brother Harry retained alongside Matthew Dodd and already ever present Under 15 members Jamie Bradley and Matthew Kerswell and Under 18 player Harry Grant. Jack Marshall will be welcomed back from a broken finger having scored a career best 43 on his last outing before the offending incident took place. Fingers crossed for a decent performance and hopefully any of you at a loose end will make the trip down to watch at the very pleasant ground down in Washington village!
