Match report
Gordy’s First Team Roundup
Consett 1st X1 finally ditched their flippers and donned cricket boots as they got the 2012 league campaign under way with a trip to Seaton Burn.
After the recent deluge which has washed out 5 matches, it was blue sky and endless sunshine which greeted the players when they arrived at the recreation ground.
With the new sponsors onboard the club were hoping that last seasons near miss out on promotion could be put right this term.
It was however to turn out very disappointing day for Consett as they went down to a 16 run defeat.
Skipper Andrew Waters lost the toss and his team not surprisingly found themselves fielding in the sapping conditions.
Mark Dixon and Kevin Hopps shared the new ball, which was sponsored by Aggbar’s Restaurant, and the first overs were wayward as the hosts scored 12 of the first over and then soon raced to 30 before both bowlers grabbed a wicket.
Callum Barnes took over from Dixon and bowled a tidy spell while Hopps continued and claimed two more scalps before earning a deserved rest with figures of 3-15 off 11 overs.
Experienced Remmer replaced Hopps and bowled 10 tight over. It was becoming clear that Consett did not want to be chasing anything over 100 due to the uneven bounce and 2 paced nature of the wicket.
Leg spinner Philip Mellons joined Remmer at the bowling crease and the pair finished off the home innings but not before they had posted a competitive looking total of 122.
Left arm seamer Remmer returned 3-17 while Mellons was more expensive with 3-34.
The feeling at tea time was due to conditions favouring the bowlers, the target was a difficult one.Six overs into the innings proved this as Consett slumped to 10-4.
The first 3 in the order can count themselves unlucky with their dismissals. Skipper Waters played one which trickled onto the stumps of an inside edge.
Then Hunter returning form Tynedale was bowled by a short ball that rolled along the ground and Barnes was unlucky to follow as he was adjudged LBW.
Andrew Forster did not offer any resistance as he edged his first ball to slip.
John Chapman with 2 sixes and the younger Barnes held up the bowlers for a short time before both drove to early at full deliveries offering catches to mid-on.
Mellons and Remmer didn’t last long leaving promotion hopes in tatters at 30-8.
The fat lady was clearing her throat but Robbie Winn made her wait and started to counter attack with lusty blows and found a batting partner in Dixon.
Dixon departed as Winn sailed past 50 and the last man in was Hopps with all the team hoping that he could keep an end up as Winn smashed them to victory.
Winn made batting look easy as he struck the ball to all parts and an unlikely victory was on the cards until Hopps tried to turn a straight delivery to leg and offered up a catch to the bowler.
The Blackfyne outfit reached 106 all out and the Burn chief destroyer was the gentle bowler White who finished with 5-28.
Consett may feel disappointed as they did not get the rub of the green on the day, however they conceded too many runs on a ‘dodgy wicket’ and if they could have only batted the overs out then they would have won comfortably.
Take nothing away from Seaton Burn though as they showed plenty of spirit and bowled with discipline on a disappointing batting surface.
