Consett & District Cricket Club Consett CC 1st XI v Annfield Plain on Sat 27 Apr 2013 at 1:30
Consett & District Cricket Club Lost by 5 wickets
Match report
Following last weeks comprehensive win over Ryton Consett were back at Blackfyne on Saturday to take on a strong looking Annfield Plain side. As the Plain are expected to be among the front runners in the league this was the first test of the home sides credentials at the higher level. In a hard fought encounter Consett came off second best but not before giving their visitors a few scares along the way.Skipper Andrew Waters lost the toss and Consett were asked to bat first against a Plain attack containing 2 former Durham County and 2 ex Academy seam bowlers on a wicket that had seen a lot of rain during the week.Gary Hunter and David Anderson coped well until the former was picked up with a sharp catch at cover for 10 bringing professional Gareth Breeze to the crease. He and Anderson added 30 before the home side lost 3 wickets quickly to leave them in trouble at 55-4. Breeze 9 chopped a delivery from Neil Killeen into his stumps before Anderson 28 and Waters 0 both drove catches to mid-off with ball appearing to hold up in the wicket.Robbie Winn and Andrew Forster dug in well and began to rebuild the innings taking the score to 99 before a rush of blood by the latter caused his downfall after scoring a gritty 13. Callum Barnes and the by now confident Winn progressed the score well to 126-5 with 6 overs to go and Consett were now expected to post a total of 155-160 which would have been very competitive on the wicket. Things did not go to plan as the Blackfyne outfit collapsed to 140 all out with more than an over unused due to some naive cricket. Winn made a fine 39 and Barnes a useful 19 with Michael Allen 4-41 and Killeen 3-19 the visitors chief destroyers. The Plain reply mirrored the Consett innings as after a steady start wickets began to fall. Breeze accounted for Melvyn Betts 19 and when Barnes replaced Anderson he soon saw off Sam Stephenson 10 and Allen 12. With the visitors 3 down for 50 the hosts were right back in the game but 2 fielding lapses close together were to prove pivotal as first Winn spurned a chance from Greg Patterson off the bowling off Rob Hasan then Hunter grassed a slip catch offered by Killeen Breeze the unlucky bowler on this occasion. The 2 batsmen made the most of their good fortune and slowly took the game away from Consett and by the time Killeen 38 offered keeper John Chapman his second catch off Barnes who finished with 3-53 the game had almost gone. Just time for Anderson to pick up a wicket before Patterson 42 no saw his side over the line with 5 wickets and 2 overs to spare. Consett had fought hard and all 4 bowlers performed well but the match had been decided in two 5 over spells during the game the death overs in the home sides innings and the 2 catches that went to ground midway through the visitors knock.Well played Annfield Plain but lots of positives from the home sides point of view as they now have some belief in themselves against the better opposition they will be facing this season .
