Philadelphia v Consett & District Cricket Club Consett CC 3rd XI on Sun 19 May 2013 at 1:45
Consett & District Cricket Club Won by 17 runs
Match report
Another excellent win for Consett 3rd X1 on a day when they contested the only game to take place in the HLSCL thus giving them an advantage over their rivals and extending their unbeaten start to the season to 3 games and already trebling last season's record of only 1 league win.
True to form captain Cox lost the toss and was asked to bat on what looked like being a difficult surface on a warm and humid day which would surely favour the ball over bat. This turned out to be exactly the case. The top order found the going very difficult in the face of an excellent spell of bowling from Philadelphia's opening duo and soon found themselves 26/4 in the 7th over having lost Turnbull (0), Scott (2), Bainbridge (5) and Wilkinson(2). Southern attempted to stop the rot with a stubborn 22 but when he was dismissed (I Cox having already fallen for 3 in the meantime) Cosnett were in dire straits on 52/6. Cook soon followed for 6 leaving us in danger of matching New Zealand's efforts at Lords. However some determined batting from the lower order helped drag the total to a slightly more respectable 102 all out which may yet prove to be a challenging total. Johnson top scored with a very good 23 in difficult conditions and was ably supported by K Winn 10 and Jamie Bradley 12 wielding the willow for the first time in 3rd X1 cricket.
A sense of belief remained during the tea interval that we were more than capable of keeping the hosts below our modest total. A watchul start by the hosts saw them reach 20 without loss after 10 overs but the bat was beaten on several occasions in a probing opening spell by Winn 0-12 and A Cox 1-17. The game turned on it's head with the introduction of Southern who replaced Winn and soon caused all manner of problems with a variety of cutters, seamers and varying lengths to claim an excellent 4-22 and in the meantime a run out helped matters even more. The home team now started to panic. A rapid 29 from number 7 batsman Greenwell then threatened to take the game completely from Consett's reach but the introduction of Jamie Bradley proved decisive as he had him caught and bowled with his 4th delivery. Jamie and Dom Scott then did an excellent job of finishing off the innings as Bradley had 2-2 from 4 and Scott bowled a very tidy 9 over spell to finish with 2-27 one of which wickets was a superb reflex catch taken by A Cox who had just replaced brother Ian and silly mid off when he clutched onto one firmly middled in his direction. This appeared to resign the hosts to defeat and they eventually crumbled for 85 in 35 overs.
This win sees Consett on a 3 match winning streak and they have now taken 56 from a possible 60 points and are showing fantastic team spirit and a willingness to win. Competition for places is also very healthy which can only be encouraging for the remainder of the season. Long may the good work continue!!!
