Consett & District Cricket Club Consett CC 3rd XI v Wansbeck on Sun 02 Jun 2013 at 1:45
Consett & District Cricket Club Won by 7 wickets

Match report Consett's unbeaten league run now stretches to an impressive 4 from 4 after an excellent win against newcomers Wansbeck Academy.

For the first time this season captain Cox won the toss (Wansbeck called incorrectly) and had no hesitation in asking Wansbeck to bat first on a used wicket.

Nick Cook's recovery from injury saw him restored to new ball duties alongside top wicket taker Southern. Excellent opening spells from both bowlers saw Wansbeck struggle to 70/6 by the time both bowlers had completed their 9 overs. Cook returned 9-1-37-2 and Southern an excellent 9-2-32-4. The onus was then over to young spinners Dominic Scott and Jamie Bradley who at the age of 14 have been bowling at a level well beyond their years in recent weeks. Dom bowled his full quota of 9 very tidy overs for 9-2-23-1 and Jamie also a very tidy spell of 6-1-24-1 to reduce the visitors further into disarray. They had in the meantime mounted a slight recovery thanks to an excellent 57 from wicket kepper Harnett who made batting far easier than those that had gone before him and he was ably supported by no.9 batsman Leason who made a determined 17. The introduction of Wilkinson saw Harnett's resistance finally ended with an excellent yorker and the tail were soon mopped up to see Wansbeck bowled out for 123. Wilkinson finishing with a very tidy 3-2-4-2. Perhaps Consett had allowed them to get 20 or so too many but still remained extremely confident of the win come the break for tea.

Philly Huntsman and Ben Clarke were to lead the Consett reply after mixed fortunes with the bat so far this season this was an excellent chance for Ben to get some much needed runs under his belt after he got a late call up due to an injury to Jack Marshall and Philly only just getting his chance to bat after being delayed in getting to the game and being excellently filled in for in the fielding stakes by the evergreen David Wilkinson.

They were not to disappoint! A dogged and workmanlike start saw the pair take the score to a pedestrian 15/0 after 10 overs. However as openers against the new ball and with plenty of batting to come they did an excellent job in blunting the away side's new ball attack and provide a solid platform from which their team could build. Huntsman in particular was in particularly determined mood seeing him score only 3 runs from his first 48 balls but importantly not offering any chances at all to the fielding side. The two eventually started to find their range with some very pleasing strokes on both sides of the wicket and reap the rewards of their initial hard work. Ben made his first 50 of the season which he brough up with his 7th wonderfully timed boudary and show a welcome return to form. I'm sure he will buy Jack a pint at some point to thank him for his opportunity to play. By the time Ben was first man out for an excellent 51 the two had added an outstanding 94 for the first wicket in 27 overs and taking their team well within reach of their target. The customary Consett wobble then saw them lose a further 2 wickets by the time the score had reached 106. Huntsman the first to go once his determined and well constructed 29 from 94 balls had came to an end and Southern stumped for 1 after some smart glove work by the visiting keeper. It was then left to Dan Burlinson 10* and captian Cox 13* to provide cameos to take their team to a much deserved victory in 34.5 overs and keep up their excellent start to the season.

Another day that saw everyone work hard and contribute to team victory was great to see and even a few folks turned out to see what all the fuss was about. Hopefully even more may come along to see the team take on Durham County Ladies in invitational friendy on 16th June at Blackfyne. Before then the good work must continue away to Bill Quay next Sunday. The team will be lead by Dave Southern that day as regular captain Cox is away on holiday so I hope his team will do all they can to keep up the good work!!
