Tantobie v Consett & District Cricket Club Consett CC 3rd XI on Sun 30 Jun 2013 at 1:45
Consett & District Cricket Club Won by 153 runs

Match report Consett's 6th league game of the season saw them make the relatively short trip to newcomers to the league, Tantobie. Pressure was on to maintain their unbeaten record following excellent wins for the First and Second teams the previous day. Consett were not to disappoint!

For once captain Cox called correctly at the toss and under pressure from his side elected to bat first. Some tight opening bowling from Tantobie saw Consett struggle badly early on and saw them reduced to 38/4 at one stage. Not an ideal situation having chosen to bat first. Those dismissed were Clarke (2), Hutsman (6), Burlinson (18) and Southern (11). A rebuilding mission of sorts then took place as Bainbridge and Wilkinson mixed quick singles with lusty blows to progress the score in excess of 80 before Wilkinson (13) was bowled. Further wickets fell as Cook (4) was harshly adjudged LBW and Bainbridge's bright innings was ended for 31 when he was well held in the outfield. The score now sat at 112/7 and things were looking quite grim. However thankfully Consett can boast a batting line up capable of scoring runs right down to No. 11. Cox came out to join Johnson in the middle with the mission of both rebuilding and ensuring the team were to post a competitive total. Order was indeed restored and a partnership of around 80 in only 9 overs saw the teams total near the 200 mark before Cox was dismissed for 21 but not before Johnson had completed an excellent first half century for the 3rds with a towering 6 over square leg and into the allotments. He unfortuntately soon followed for an excellent top scoring 56, 50 of which were scored in boundaries (11x4, 1x6). It was then left to last pair Bradley and Scott to secure maximum batting points and drag the team past 200 which they did with ease before Bradley was to be last man dismissed for 13 and leave Consett all out for 215 albeit having only used up 31.4 of the permitted 45 overs.

Tea was taken in positive mood that we had more than enough runs on the board to make it 6 from 6 unbeaten and the bowlers weren't to disappoint. Opening pair Cook and Southern were to completely blow away the Tantobie batting line up seeing them reduced to 42/7 by the 10th over. The order of the day was of course to bowl full and straight as it turned out 9 of the 10 wickets taken would be bowled with the other caught at mid-wicket from a filthy half tracker!
Cook produced an opening burst of 4-18 and Southern 3-24 as their competition for leading wicket taker continues before Cox turned to his two Junior spin bowlers to finish they job off. They both showed excellent control and variations in flight as Bradley recorded 2-6 including the wicket of Tantobie's top scorer Carr who managed a very respectable 33 opening the batting but was eventually the 8th wicket to fall and Scott recorded 1-12. Tantobie were to eventually to be dismissed for 62 from the 5th ball of the 16th over. Perhaps they too like Consett seem to think the idea of playing a full 45 overs is unnecessary.
They did play the game in an excellent spirit and at one point had Consett on the ropes potentially when they had slipped to 7 down early on but thankfully Consett were able to dig deep and produce a 153 run victory which in the end proved convincing as any this season but things could have been much different at one point. The unbeaten run now stretches to 6 from 6 and the team have now taken 115 from a possible 120 points in league play! The next game should be against Backworth but as yet it is unknown when as they are proving rather difficult to contact to organise the rearrangement due to the ground being double booked. Long may the good work and unbeaten run continue!!! Also a special thanks to Mr and Mrs Scott for again performing the arduous task of keeping score in the absence of our regular scorer, possibly not the best way to spend their Sunday afternoon when wishing to relax and watch their son perform but an effort much appreciated and a vital aspect of the game!
