Consett & District Cricket Club Consett CC 3rd XI v Backworth on Sun 07 Jul 2013 at 1:45
Consett & District Cricket Club Lost by 66 runs

Match report Possibly the warmest day of the year so far saw Backworth visit still unbeaten Consett. Unfortunately 6 hours later Consett were no longer to be unbeaten after an almighty collapse snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. Sunday saw jack Marshall make a welcome return from injury, under 15 Lewis Miller given his first opportunity to impress with the ball and Dan Burlinson have his first attempt at 'donning the mits'

Despite the searing heat captain Cox was giving the blessing of his team and upon winning the toss decided with a strong 7 man attack bowling first was the best policy. Miller and Cook were on new ball duties and both bowled a probing line and length to beging which saw Cook rewarded when McClean was caught behind by Burlinson after making only 9. Continued tight bowling saw No. 3 Wiseman run out without scoring in the 9th over after excellent work in the covers by Wilkinson. This brought captain Duncan to the crease and he and Collins added 30 before he was extremely well caught by Bradley off the bowling of Southern and he was quickly followed by Crowe who was dismissed first ball after being clean bolwed by Wilkinson. This left the visitors 54/4 at the first drinks interval 15 overs in and the home side feeling pleased with their decision to field. However the arrival of Liddle at No. 6 was to see a significant change in fortunes for the visitors He and Collins were to add 133 runs in only 18 overs with Collins particularly harsh on young spinner Scott launching him for several sixes to the short legside boundary. At the second drinks interval a group debate took place and this seemed to reinvigorate the hosts as they realised they now needed one final big push to ensure they would not be faced with a mammoth total and that 5 bowling points were crucial in their bid for promotion/league success. A double change of bowling saw Wilkinson reintroduced at the start of the 33rd over and this reaped the rewards as he had Liddle well held by Miller after he had made 57. Clarke was to make his first appearance in as a bowler in this match and his spell over 6 overs was to prove pivotal. He immediately bowled an immaculate line and length from the off which tied the batsmen down. Collins was to reach an 82 ball century featuring 11 boundaries and 5 maximums. Clarke had the last laugh however by removing the batsman clean bowled with the very next delivery. he took a further 2 wickets and the returning Cook 1 which combined with a run out saw an excellent recovery and Backworth dismissed for 222 in the final over which at least ensured maximum bowling points had been gained after a gruelling 2 and a half hours fielding in intense heat.

Tea was taken a little more quietly than in previous weeks as this was certainly the stiffest task Consett had faced so far this season. There was of course still the usual feeling that we could of course carry out the task in hand and gain a victory. Clarke and Bainbridge opened up with the task of setting a platform for the team to build around. Bainbridge played some attractive drives and one lovely flick over square leg for 6 but fell for 13 when cleaned bolwed by an inswinger from Burtenshaw. Burlinson was next to the crease and after looking initially solid he feathered a defensive prod behind to the keeper off the bowling of Robson. Southern was next to the crease and after walloping one of his trademark sixes he was hardshly adjudged lbw off the bowling of Robson when the ball perhaps appeared a little high. Consett now stoff 43/3 and things weren't looking great. Out strode Wilkinson who has been in excellent form so far in third team cricket and he was again to excel on Sunday. Between him and Clarke they added a brilliant 101 runs in 16 overs which combined excellent running and some masterful stroke play with Wilkinson the chief aggressor. He unfortunately was next to fall with the score on 144 lbw to the left arm spin of Colllins after an excellent and brisk 67 which included 8 boundaries and 3 maximums. At this point the game was still well in the balance. Unfortunately this is where the wheels well and truly came off. Requiring a now modest 78 from 19 overs in comparison to their initial task things went horribly wrong. Clarke was next to go with the score on 150 playing a tired drive which looped to cover after a very patient and solid 31 after opening the batting and doing exactly what had been asked of him. Captain Cox was to follow next ball clean bowled after playing down the wrong line and the wickets continued to fall. Scott unluckily picked out square leg from a loose delivery from Collins to be dismissed for 0, Bradley fell to the same bowler after finding the sweet spot with a cover drive but unfortunately hitting it straight to the cover fielders hands. Cook followed next over cleaned bowled for 6 meaning any realistic hopes of victory were now gone and when Marhsall was last man out for 1 to the excellent Veitch (4-24) Consett had lost their last 7 wickets for only 12 runs and in the process their unbeaten record in league play.

Thankfully they picked up 8 points from the game to add to their tally which now sees them on 123 from 7 games played, 46 ahead of Backworth who lie second on 77 but have played 2 games less. This Sunday sees no game before a return to action and hopefully a return to winning ways on 21st July when Consett entertain Bill Quay
