Consett & District Cricket Club Consett CC 3rd XI v Durham Ladies T20 on Sun 16 Jun 2013 at 4.00pm
Consett & District Cricket Club Won 72 runs
Match report
After the first game finished rather quicker than the teams had hoped the captains agreed that tea should be taken and that they should then play a one off T20 in which Consett were invited to bat first. The batting order was just continued on from the first game which saw undefeated batsmen Bainbridge and Wilkinson open the innings for Consett. The pair raced to 42/0 after the opening 4 overs with a combination of powerful hitting and some excellent running between the sticks as ever orchestrated by the lively wilkinson. The first wicket fell in the 5th over with the score on 47 as Bainbridge was well held on the cover Boundary for 26, Johnson joined Wilkinson at the crease and they settled for steady accumulation and progressed the score on to 76 before Wilkinson was out to a smart stumping by Hockaday at the start of the 10th over despite his amusing efforts to regain his ground. Durham then applied the brakes over the next few overs in which Cook and Johnson shared 40 but the majority of their runs came in singles and the occasional 2s as the bowlers kept good control and the fielders worked hard to pull the game back in the favour somewhat. When Johnson was unluckily dismissed for 30 run out backing up after a powerful drive from Cook had been deflected onto the stumps at the non-strikers end. As ever a Consett collapse was on the cards. Cook had made a patient 20 before offering a catch and then the rest of the order folded somewhat to see Consett eventually bowled out for 146 with 1 ball of the innings remaining and maybe 20 or so runs short of what they had threatened after their explosive start.
Over to Durham, keen to atone for the disappointing innings first time round. A different opening bowling partnership of Clarke and Southern bolwed good tight lines to restrict scoring opportunities for the opposition and when they had both finished their 4 over spells Durham were some way short of the required rate having reached 28/0 after 8. Clarke especially impressive bowling 4 for just 10 runs. Durham appeared content from this stage just to ensure they batted out the overs and maximise the chance to gain practice and were well restricted by the remaining bowlers used in the shape of Turnbull 1-10 (who unfortunately suffered a shoulder injury and will miss the next few weeks), Bainbridge 0-15, Johnson showing his true all round abilities by taking the ball rather than the gloves for 1-11, Scott 1-6 and Wilkinson 0-3. Clarke also chipped in with a smart bit of fielding which saw Hockaday run out after slight confusion with her partner. Durham eventually finished on 74-4.
All round a good day for Consett but one cause for concern was the fact that when playing tight wides they had delivered a grand total of 35 in the 34 overs they bowled over the day. This equates to an extra 5.5 oversin total and today they got away with this but with a cup quarter final in T20 either away to Philadelphia or Wearmouth looming they can't afford to keep giving away so many extra runs.
Again many thanks given to Durham Ladies for providing the opposition on this day and treating the many who came to watch to two intriguing games of cricket and for many their first viewing of women's cricket in the county. Many thanks to Lesley and Susan for the teas and a big thanks to all who came and supported the teams on the day on a lovely sunny day at Blackfyne.
23rd June sees Consett travel down the road to play a 'friendly' with local rivals Shotley Bridge in a test of unbeaten from Div 1 vs unbeaten from Div 2. Fingers crossed. They then return to league action with a trip to newcomers Tantobie on 30th June. Hope to see some of you at these upcoming games and keep up the good work all involved.
