Consett & District Cricket Club Consett CC 3rd XI v Shotley Bridge on Sun 04 May 2014 at 1:45
Consett & District Cricket Club Lost by 4 wickets
Match report
Kicking off the season with a pleasant affair in the Bob Langford Cup against the fellas from just down the bank. Early season conditions made sure that this was never going to be a high scoring affair and so it proved.
Consett chose to bat first on a sticky green top and struggled to 87 all out with Ben Clarke top scoring with 14. Unfortunately 8 of the Consett side were bowled. Some to ill adjudged swipes to the shorter boudary and some failing to heed the advice of "get on the front foot" and playing back to balls that kept low and suffering the ultimate price. Special mention to young Oliver Gibson from Shotley Bridge who bowled an excellent 6 over spell taking 5-15 by doing all the basics right and bowling full and straight thus allowing the pitch to do the talking and the batsmen to offer a little assistance too!!
And so the second innings and it really was a case of experience winning the day for the visitors. Brian Gibson lead the way with 42 at the top of the order which proved the difference between the two teams as apart from him and Telford the rest of their team were dismissed for single figure scores. Consett tried in vain to defend a low total and it did in fact take the visitors 36.1 overs to achieve their target which is testament to the bowlers and fielders sticking to the task in hand. Special mention to Dan Burlinson who bowled a 9 over spell with figures of 1-5 (an economy rate of 0.55) as he shared wickets with Wilkinson, Bradley, Southern and Bainbridge (2).
A slightly disappointing start to the season but it had been shown that we could certainly compete in this division with this being against the team who in fact won Division 1 last season. Next weekend sees league action begin in a replay of this fixture which is also taking place at Blackfyne with a 1.45 pm start on Sunday 11th May. Hopefully with a couple of players to come back in we can go that step further and achieve a victory and get the season started. Hope to see as many of you as possible there to support the lads against the local rivals!!!!
