Consett & District Cricket Club Consett CC 3rd XI v Lanchester on Sun 17 Aug 2014 at 1:45
Consett & District Cricket Club Lost by 97 runs

Match report Consett welcomed Lanchester for their second visit of the season having already played them (and lost) in the Divison One T20 cup earlier in the season. This week saw another debutant for impressive under 15 players Jack Murphy and Mattie Davison in a team which included 7 of the clubs junior section and in total 8 players under the age of 21 making Captain Cox feel rather old when glancing around the dressing room and filling in his team sheet! However this the direction in which the 3rd X1 will be going from now on as the youth is indeed the future of the club and hopefully some of these players will be stars of the future at 1st X1 level!!

A green looking wicket which had been used the previous day and saw the 1st X1 bowl out Annfield Plain for 60 was to be used. Away captain McConnell called correctly and after much head scratching chose to bat first, fine with captain Cox who had wanted to bowl first to give folk a chance to bowl some overs as batting first had regularly not worked out this season with far too many low totals on display!

The opening bowlers were to be Murphy and the younger of the Davison brothers, Harry. Wild and windy conditions would make it a test for the two who had a combined age 1 year younger than the captain (is it too early for retirement?!). A couple of nervy early deliveries and wides from Murphy showed it may be an issue but by the end of his first over he had found a good line and some swing at a decent pace too. Davsion jnr settled straight onto a good line and length and was soon to be rewarded in his second over as he had Sommersall driving and nicking behind where Grant took a smart one handed catch with the gloves having initially been wrong footed. Next over it was the turn of Murphy as a full swinging delivery was too good for the defences of Dodds and he was clean bowled having made only 3 and leaving the visitors 9 for 2. Consett didn't have to wait too much longer for their next breakthrough as Hunt who had already had a few wild swings at tempting deliveries from both bowlers got it all wrong to a low full toss from Davison and was safely caught by Clarke at midwicket having made 7 and leaving the score 22 for 3 ( who said you can't bowl full tosses?) Halliday was next to go again to the bowling of Davison as he got one just back of a length which Remmer held well low in the gully. Harry in only his second game and aged only 13 now had 3-15 after his opening 5 overs, only his age preventing him from continuing as that's all he was allowed to bowl. A superb effort from a very confident young player. Lanchester were now reeling at 27/4 and appeared as though much was going to rely on captain McConnell who was batting at 4.
He was to be joined by Ramshaw and they set about rebuilding the innings for the away team. At first their progress was slow in the face of some well disciplined bowling from Remmer and Bradley. Unfortunately these two went wicketless but did ensure that by the half way stage Lanchester had reached only 57 but crucially still for the loss of only 4 wickets. Worryingly by this point McConnell had been dropped twice and this would go on to prove very costly. The introduction of Clarke into the attack signalled time for aggression as he followed on from Remmer (6-2-10-0) and Clarke was promptly smashed straight back down the ground first ball. The pair progressed the score along to 84 in the 28th over before Ramshaw was a bit too early on a drive and was held by Wilkinson at cover giving a much needed breakthrough. The 29th over would be the last from Bradley as he recorded figures of 9-2-22-0, a rare occasion for him to go wicketless despite maintaining a consistent line and length throughout. The introduction of Kerswell would then signal further intentions of aggression from the visitors. Both he and Clarke would go for more than 6 an over as Lanchester went about setting a target of note. Kennington would make only 3 in a partnership of 17 before the Clarke - Wilkinson combination would account for him too. 101-6 and hopes of keeping Lanchester under 150 were being discussed. Beaumont was next to the wicket and he wasn't about to hang around. he took a particular liking to Kerswell striking some lusty blows to the leg side. He and the skipper were to add 51 in only 5 overs before the returning Murphy who came on to replace Clarke (7-0-45-2) once his spell was up had McConnell caught at cover after he had made an excellent if not somewhat fortunate 77 which included 10 boundaries. Fortunate as he ended up being dropped 4 times on his way to that total. Beaumont continued to swing away and had made 31 before becoming a first wicket for Kerswell who had his revenge by firing one through and clean bowling him to leave the score 160-8. In the meantime Murphy had completed his full quota to finish with outstanding figures of 9-3-19-2 on debut. Into the last few overs and Davison snr decided he was worthy of an over and despite opening up with an enormous wide found some inswing to account for Butler who was clean bowled for 11 in search of a final flourish. It was then up to Kerswell to wrap things up as he had Guthrie caught by Clarke for 0 half way through the final over of the innings giving Clarke his third catch in the process and Kerswell figures of 7.3-1-48-2 and Lanchester a final total of 177. All in all despite a few dropped catches (all from senior members of the team) a good effort against a strong team and great to see the juniors all stick to their tasks so well and not let their heads drop even in the face of the late onslaught.

Tea was taken with some welcome refuge away from the wild winds out on the field. Well done to Julia on a good job well done as always on the catering as always. Then during tea the captains favourite bit, what on earth to do with the batting order. It turned out that the 8th different opening partnership of the season was about to be on display due to Bradley suffering from a lack of confidence and asking to drop down the order.

Cox jr was to open with Kerswell and the innings was to get off to a bad start as Kerswell was clean bowled second ball by Ramshaw for 0. Cox saw out a maiden at the other end before Clarke was next to follow, again for a duck with the first ball of Ramshaw's second over. The last ball of Halliday's second over would then see Cox dismissed LBW (yet again) also for 0 and Consett in total disarray at 0-3 after 4 overs. 178 suddenly seemed light years away. Wilkinson eventually got the Consett score up and running in the 5th over with a three much to the home teams relief!! He and Mattie Davison at least managed to last until the tenth over before the next wicket fell as Davison who had looked comfortable so far got one slightly wrong off Halliday and was caught by Killeen having made 6. The score now 19/4 and the onus on Captain Cox to repeat the achievements of his opposite number. Wilkinson hit a couple of fours in the next Ramshaw over but maybe got too carried away as the ball after Cox nudged one to get off the mark Wilkinson aimed a big hit over the shorter leg side to a ball that was too full and was adjudged LBW for 16, possibly the easiest decision the umpire made all day. The score was now 28/5 and things were looking bleak. Cox was joined by Murphy having his first 'dig' in senior cricket, he clipped his second ball through the leg side for 4 and survived the rest of the over. Cox decided the best policy now would be to go on the offensive and promptly took 15 from the next Ramshaw over, his final of the innings to try and get things going a bit. Unfortunately that was as good as it got. Murphy took one off new bowler Kennington and Cox played too early at one back of a length and gave Beaumont the simplest catch he will take all season at mid-off having made 15 an leaving Consett on 47-6 and little or no chance of chasing down their target. This soon became 47-7 as Grant could only spoon his second ball to Guthrie at square leg giving Kennington his second gift wrapped wicket only four balls into his spell.
Were Consett even going to make 50 was suddenly the worry amongst the team. Bradley and Murphy at least took the hosts past that landmark before Bradley (who chose to hide at 9) missed a relatively slow full toss which should probably have landed in the graveyard giving Killeen his first wicket having made only 1 and leaving the score 54-8. Murphy soon followed having battled away for a while. He gave Killeen his second wicket caught by Dodds at cover after being too early through his shot after making 8. The score now 55-9 and Consett also in danger of losing by more than 100 runs for the second time this season. Thankfully Remmer and Harry Davison combined for a last wicket partnership of 25 and thus avoided this humiliation in the process and did a good job of showing up the top order by playing patiently and waiting for the bad balls. They had taken the score to 80 before Davison would be last man out for 7, bowled by Dodds who somehow managed to sneak one through his defences and leave Remmer unbeaten on 13, one of only three Consett batsmen to make double figures.

All in all a comfortable victory for Lanchester but some very promising signs for the future from Consett as all the juniors contributed well on a tough day for all manner of reasons. Hopefully more cricket will take them from strength to strength and they can continue their development in the winter and get the third team back to their winning ways of 2013. Next week sees Consett travel to Washington for a re-arranged game and no doubt the usual bank holiday struggle to turn out a team. Maybe some more debuts are in store at selection on Monday... Well done everyone though and let's build on this next week and see how we can get on and maybe get a win that might just hopefully keep us in the first division for next season!!!!
