Consett & District Cricket Club Consett CC 3rd XI v Philadelphia on Sun 09 Aug 2015 at 1.45
Consett & District Cricket Club Won by 76 runs
Match report
The visit of Philadelphia saw a few season records created and almost a new and very unwanted one at the same time. This game saw Consett amass their highest total of the season (239), the highest partnership of the season between Cox and Huntsman (117) and the highest individual total of the season by Huntsman (98*) Other vital contributions came from Jamie Bradley 42 an skipper Cox (61) as only Singh for the visitors (3-29) didn't go around the park in the face of the home sides final total of 239/4. Plenty of mouth from visiting captain Embleton was to prove influential in stoking the fires of what became rather a tasty affair in the second half as he completely lost control of both his team and himself and couldn't come up with any answers as the home side scored in excess of 5 an over throughout.
Consett were of course confident of achieving victory having racked up such an imposing total but were warned against complacency at the tea interval as these things are not often as easy as they look.
The early wicket of Durham ladies player Petherick after she had made just 3 gave the hosts the ideal start but this was as easy as it was to get for a fair while. Singh combined with thwaites to add 109 for the second wicket in 22 overs and advance the score to 120 and give the hosts an outside chance of victory before Bradley dismissed Thwaites after he had made a patient 45. This brought the away captain to the crease who was welcomed with choice words from all directions after his own antics and suddenly didn't appear to have quite so much to say for himself when his team mates were there to stick up for him. He then proceeded to do his best to make sure his team would not win the games he selfishly occupies the crease rather than looking to advance the score. This pressure told on singh as he holed out for an excellent 66 having made contributions with both bat and ball and surely proving to be the visitors man of the match. Finally a flash point arrived as Embleton was clearly stumped off the bowling of Bradley by O'Neill only for one of his own team at square leg to give it not out. Several words were exchanged between several players before umpire Oliver ensured calm was restored. This would last only a few balls before an end of over chat yielded the words 'I was never giving that out against these lot after the way they have gone on' Cue another verbal volley between the teams before him captain Cox put the opposition firmly in his place on how his stupidity had caused the game to boil over in the first place. Thats mackems for you I suppose... Umpire Oliver brought the two captains together and told them anymore and the game would be finished before the scheduled close as an abandoned game which explains the earlier mention of an unwanted record.
In the end he was to be dismissed by Smith and Philadelphias run chase fizzled out as Consett ran out victors by 76 runs with Philadelphia finishing on 163/6 from their 45 overs and Consett running out deserved winners and in the process ending a run of four straight defeats! Well done to everyone on their efforts and a great effort and show of team togetherness in the face of some rather moronic opposition play!
