Consett & District Cricket Club Consett CC 3rd XI v Ryton on Sun 29 May 2016 at 1:30
Consett & District Cricket Club Won by 43 runs
Match report
The fourth league game of the season and one of Consett's few home games of the season as Ryton were the visitors. Two consecutive wins were hoping to be built on.
Consett were to bat first having show a good ability to post competitive totals in their 3 previous games. A change at the top of the order saw Clarke in with Bradley. They combined for a steady opening stand of 31 in 10 overs before Bradley was first to go having made 12. This was the start of a collapse as Clarke followed 1 run later having made 10 and Pyke a further run later as he made a duck leaving the hosts 33 for 3. Jackson didn't fare much better as he was bowled for 2 which meant Consett were in real trouble against a youthful Ryton side at 46/4. Captain Cox was to join Wilkinson at the wicket however and they set about the task of rebuilding on a wicket which was offering enough to keep all of the bowlers interested. A partnership which spanned 13 overs saw them add 59 before Wilkinson was caught and bowled for a gritty 26 off 55 balls and leaving the score 105/5. Marshall came in and showed immediate attacking intent but lost his partner Cox who would finish the innings top scorer with 45 before he was out playing all round a straight one with the score 129/6. Kelly hung around to help add a further 26 runs before he was Lbw (as usual) having made 5. After a rapid 39 from only 31 balls Marshall was then bowled leaving cosset 163/8 with 7 overs still to bat. However sensible defence and quick running saw an unbroken stand of 28 between Boyle (8*) and Andrew Cox (14*) as the innings eventually closed on 191 for 8
At tea much debate as to whether or not this would be a winning total was to be had and an agreement on tight fielding and bowling hopefully being enough to secure a third straight victory.
Ryton came out with attacking intent however taking a particular liking to the bowling of Roe whose 3 overs yielded 26 runs which is more than his entire 9 would usually be seen to go for. He was quickly replaced by Wilkinson who joined Clarke at the bowling crease and it wasn't look before that combination would see the first wicket fall as Wilkinson held a good catch at long-off to see P Clarke dismissed for 12. J Robson and H Clarke then combine for an innings high stand of 51 before Robson was to be dismissed with Wilkinson having his second catch of the innings this time off the bowling off Boyle after he had made 24. Ryton now sat on 87/2 after 19 overs and were in an excellent position to try to go on and win the game with H Clarke well set at the other end. Captain Hawley made a quicker 15 in helping advance the score past 100 with Ryton appearing to be cruising to their target before the match changing moment arrived. The introduction of Andrew Cox who had preferred not to bowl was to prove crucial. He first removed Hawley for 15 with Pyke taking the catch behind the wicket making it 108/3. Parr was next to go for 4 as he was given out Lbw with the score 123/4 and Cosnett now giving themselves a fighting chance of getting back what had seemed a lost cause. Cox was at it again shortly after as he had S Robson caught and bowled for 3 to leave it 129/5. With the pressure of seeing wickets fall around him Clarke decided it was time to try and go big off the last over from Bradley and a mistimed swipe to cow corner saw him well held by Clarke having made an excellent 66 including four boundaries and two maximums. At 132/6 Consett were back in the driving seat. With the score on 140 Cox took his fourth wicket caught by older brother Ian as he went on his way to excellent figures of 9-4-15-4. Two more wickets were still required for victory and they weren't far in coming. Clarke returned after a good opening burst to remove Peatland for just 1 caught by Marshall before that man Marshall was to take the final wicket of Crellin for 0 as Ryton were bowled out for 148 handing Consett their third consecutive win with the winning margin a relatively comfortable 43 runs.
Awards time. Some vital contributions with the bat, Ian Cox with 45, Jack Marshall with 39 and Simon Wilkinson with his determined 26 to match his 2 catches and figures of 8-3-10-10 but on this occasion Man Of The Match must go to Andrew Cox - Sensible batting at the end of the innings saw him make a rare undefeated double figure score of 14 and then when Consett's backs were to the wall with Ryton 100/2 he came to the bowling crease and turned the game on it's head with figures of 9-4-15-4. Well done Andrew.
Dick of the day - A few contenders today.Daniel Pyke's promotion up the order yielding 0 runs and dropping a catch off Simon, Jack's massive wide on when he was dismissed for 39, The usually economical Mark only getting through 3 overs at a rate of almost 9. However on this occasion there could only be one winner. Despite top scoring with 45 he captain's behaviour on the field and derogatory comments toward the opposition (even if it did work) means that there can only be one winner this week and Dick Of The Day is Ian Cox, well done!
