Kimblesworth v Consett & District Cricket Club Consett CC 3rd XI on Sun 17 Jul 2016 at 1:30
Consett & District Cricket Club Won by 4 wickets
Match report
Having been dumped out of both cups at the hands of Kimblesworth Consett travelled away knowing that a tough game would be in store against the big hitting hosts who along with Littletown looked the linkely candidates at this stage to provide the main competition at the top of the table. As usual Cox lost the toss and Nish elected to bat on what looked a belter of a wicket on a roasting hot Sunday afternoon playing at possibly the smallest ground in North East cricket. How would Consett rise, or fall to the occasion.
Given the nature of the conditions captain Cox took the unusual decision to open the bowling with spin which saw Roe and Bradley on new ball duties. After going for 9 off the first over of the innings this could have proven to be a disastrous decision but our lads are made of sterner stuff. Despite early attacking intentions Praba was to be first to fall as one big swing too many saw him cleaned up by Roe having made 11. Tharshan was next to follow as he was bowled by Bradley after several swings and misses saw him depart for 0. Kethanan followed in the very next over again bowled going for glory having made 11,as Roe had his second wicket of the game and the hosts found themselves in a spot of trouble at 24/3 and star batsman and captain Nish batting at 10 due to a broken finger sustained in the cup tie at Consett 11 days earlier. Start of the tenth over and Consett were celebrating again as Roe claimed his third of the day again clean bowled as Ushanathan became the second man to depart for a duck and leave the hosts in serious trouble at 29/4. Two experienced heads in Turnbull and Smith came together however and steadied the ship for the hosts. They saw off the two opening bowlers who both finished with excellent figures (Bradley 9-2-27-1 and Roe 9-2-21-3) at which point Kimblesworth had reached 50/4 off the first 18 overs. The two experienced heads then safely negotiated 17 overs in a partnership worth 75 before the next breakthrough eventually came thanks to Wilkinson winning an Lbw decision to remove Turnbull for a well made 40. 11 more runs were added before the vital breakthrough was made as a rare appearance at the bowling crease from Winn brought the wicket of Smith for 47 somewhat unlucky to be caught at deep point from a full toss. They all count however! with the score now on 115/6 Consett had high hopes of keeping the hosts below 150, something most other teams could only have dreamed of. Third team veteran Southern then went to work on the tail as he removed Loges for 10 caught by Turnbull, B Smith Lbw for 1, Mayuran caught by Wilkinson for 3 and the dangerous Nish clean bowled for 14 to record figures of 9-0-55-4 and see Kimblesworth dismissed for 150 inside 36 overs.
At tea captain Cox warned against early optimism and reminded the team of their struggle for runs in the previous encounter but also that we had the talent on display to overhaul such a total if people played to their potential.
Regular openers Bradley and Winn strode to the crease confident of making a dent in the target and did so with aplomb!! Watchful defence mixed with some glorious drives saw them propel Consett to 64/0 after only 10 overs and leave the hosts very much scratching their heads for answers. Their stand was finally ended at 89 as a tired swipe across the line from Bradley saw him sky one and be caught by the wicket keeper having made an excellent 42. Winn followed an over later for 36 clean bowled by Loges having made an equally good 36 and leave Consett still very well positioned on 94/2 off 15 overs. Only 57 runs needed off 30 overs, surely it was a formality. Well sort of. Turnbull failed to trouble the scorers as he gave Smith his second wicket caught in the gully to make it 95/3. Ray hit two boundaries before being caught and bowled by Loges to leave the score 104/5 and Consett in danger of making the game very interesting. Wilkinson also came and went hitting two boundaries of this own before also departing for 8 bowled by Smith attempting to cut one that was far too close leaving the visitors 118/5 and in serious danger of throwing the game away. Marshall and Cook restored some calm as a couple of Blows from Cook saw him race to 20 before one shot too many saw a leading edge provide an easy catch off the bowling of Turnbull and the score 132/6. Captain Cox strode to the wicket with strict instructions of no more wickets to be lost and did just that with 3 not out before vice captain marshall hit two of his favoured leg side shots off the Bowling of Smith for maximums to seal the victory for Consett by 4 wickets having taken only 25 overs to knock off the runs.
An excellent all round display by the team which saw them give probably their best performance of the season which now made the league title race look much like a straight battle between ourselves and Littletown based on current results.
Man Of The Match - Jamie Bradley - an excellent all round performance bowling 9 very tight overs after bing asked to open the bowling and going for 9 off his first to only concede a further 18 runs off his next 8 on such a small ground and then backed that up with Consett's top score of 42 to continue his excellent form so far this season!
Dick Of The Day - Ste Turnbull - bit of a miserable day as his one over yielded ten runs and no wicket and then his misery was complete as he was dismissed 5th ball for none playing a nothing shot guiding the ball to guly, throughly deserved today Ste well done!!
