Marsden v Consett & District Cricket Club Consett CC 3rd XI on Sun 25 Jun 2017 at 1.30pm
Consett & District Cricket Club Won by 7 wickets

Match report Onto the 7th league game of the season and 3rd away game of the season. This time a nice trip to the seaside to face Marsden where as many have pointed out previously you can see the sea from the changing rooms, simple things eh....

Two changes from the side that beat Shotley would take to the field, out went Captain Cox (stag do - not his) and Cook (unavailable), to be replaced by K Winn (not on a session for once) and Gall (back fit). Vice-captain Marshall would take charge for the first time this season and go in search of his first victory as skipper of the Barmy Army against a team sitting bottom of the league with only 20 points from the same number of games played as Consett. He promptly proved to be much more use than Cox by winning the toss and with plenty bowlers to call upon had no hesitation in asking the hosts to bat first.

This looked an excellent decision as Roe struck in the very first over as he clean bowled Hall for a duck with the score on 1. It then wasn't long before Burlinson got in on the act and with the score on 12 he removed Johns for 6 caught behind by Horn who was to have quite a day behind the stumps. A period of calm for ten overs as a third wicket stand of 44 was put together by Crews and Amess before the latter would become a first wicket for Jamie B with the score on 56 as he was stumped by Horn for 8. A further 19 runs were added before Sneller followed for 5 as horn collected his third dismissal behind the sticks and Jamie had his second wicket courtesy of an edge. The big wicket came just four runs later as that combo came good again as having made 55 (which turned out to be half of his teams total), Crews was to become a third wicket for Jamie and a second stumping for Horn and leave the hosts on 79 for 5 in the 20th over and in danger of making a low score. Wickets continued to tumble however. A further two wickets in his 7th over saw Jamie take his total for the day to 5 as he bowled Curry for 1 and then Harland for 12 two balls later. At 93 for 7 Marsden were struggling to post an imposing total. 5 runs later captain Elliott was dismissed for 6 as Jamie picked up his 6th, this time courtesy of the safe hands of Roe. With the score still on 98 Jamie was to take his SEVENTH wicket of the innings courtesy of a third stumping by Horn which was also his FIFTH dismissal of the day, something I can't imagine happens all that often in Sunday cricket. Bassett and Tully would ensure a batting point was achieved as they took the score on to 109 before Marshall brought himself on and burgled the final wicket to see Marsden dismissed for 109 and hopefully leave the visitors an excellent chance of knocking off the 110 required for victory....

Another week, another opening partnership for Consett. This time Jonny Bradley (bottled it at Shotley) would partner Ray at the top of the order hoping to lay a solid foundation. Having reached 10 in the third over they would lose their first wicket as Ray nicked behind when chasing a wide one which on another day would have flown to the boundary off the middle as top scorer Crews bagged a first wicket for Marsden. His follow through became noticeably longer after this and his stares much more of a feature as Winn joined Jonny B at the crease. Initial patience saw the pair take their team to the relative calm of 42 for 1 after the ten over mark. They also then brought up the team 50 before Jonny hung his partner out to dry as both he and Winn would end up at the same end when a single should have been taken and Winn was ran out by the full 22 yards having made 14. Next up the brothers would bat together as Jamie came out to the middle. Jonny was playing some nice drives by now and after a watchful start Jamie started to cut loose. However with the score on 72 Jonny would become third man out having made 38 as he was bowled by Harland in what had been quite an attacking innings for him. Wilkinson was next and without further alarm they hurried Consett to their required total half way through the 21st over. Jamie would finish 30 not out to go with his earlier 7 for 17 and Wilkinson would finish unbeaten on 12 as Consett had their 6th successful chase of the season in a 7 wicket victory and take their point total to 140 points from a possible 140 so far.

A day of milestones all round, Marshall with his first victory as captain of a senior side, Stephen Horn claiming an impressive five dismissals behind the stumps but without much argument the team were quick to vote for a return to form for Mr 2016! Having finished with figures of 9-4-17-7 and then struck 30 not out from 28 balls there could only be one Man Of The Match - well done Jamie Bradley, nice to have you back!
Dick Of The Day was a little more difficult to judge this week as Simon didn't bowl or drop any catches (shock). On a day when pretty much everything went wrong there was only one stand out moment. Having been called through for an easy single, captain cardboard remained completely stationary and was left stood next to his partner who was then ran out by the full 22 yards as a result, so therefor this weeks winner despite top scoring with 38, arise Jonny Bradley!

Another cracking effort from the team on the day which has seen a first half of the season far exceeding initial expectations. Next up are two cup games, firstly Wednesday 28th June with a home tie against Ryhope in the Division 1 cup, before Lanchester come to play the second round of the Bob Langord on Wednesday 5th July. No league game until Sunday 9th July when they make the trip to Gosforth to take on Fenham Falcons, with Sunday 2nd July being dedicated to a NTSL double weekend with the 1st X1 being the home team against Lanchester for those who still wish to receive a Sunday cricket fix.....
