Consett & District Cricket Club Lost by 25 runs

Match report Second cup competition of the season which is in T20 form saw Cosnett make a Thursday night trip to Washington. A Youthful looking team took to the field on this occasion which for once did not include any debuts or Lazarus like returns. The first game so far this season played in glorious sunshine and actual warmth to accompany it!!! Might it be the last however? Captain Cox again called right at the toss, winning his 4th out of 5 (if only his team had the same record) and elected to bowl first and let the lads what they needed to do in reply.

The seldom available Clarke was to open the bowling and his rustiness was evident as 25 were taken from his first two overs, a combination of no balls and wides not helping his cause. Thankfully leading wicket taker Kerswell was doing a tight job from the other end. After four overs the hosts had raced to 36/0 but a bowling change worked wonders as Remmer struck with his second ball to clean bowl Hughes for 7. His introduction slowed the scoring somewhat as he combined well with Kerswell who was to finish an excellent spell with a double wicket maiden in the 8th over to peg the hosts back to 51/3 and give him excellent figures of 4-1-13-2 having removed Ladler for 27 and Hebron for 0 both clean bowled. He was replaced by the returning Jamie Bradley who also did his best to keep things tight. This worked well as by the 15th over the run rate was now well below 6 with the score on 80/3. Unfortunately 51 were added in the last 5 overs with Bradley picking up the wicket of Pickering who was well held by Kerswell at mid-off for 22 and the comical run out of Stott after he had made 4 in search of more runs. The experienced and well set Nelson would make his way to 49 not out however and guide his side to 131/5 with some excellent late hitting. Not such a bad effort in the end from Cosnett but after bringing things back so well maybe they had just let the hosts get a few too many. As ever a total of 20 extras didn't help with almost 3 extra overs bowled due to wides and no balls....

So at just over a run a ball hopefully Consett could make a good fist of the chase and set up a tie against Sacristan in the next round. As ever Cosnett chose to do things the difficult way. Grant was out with the score on 5 in the second over as he top edged to third man for 0, Marshall soon followed for 4 as he was bowled by one that allegedly nipped away to leave the score 6/2 after 2. Clarke was next to go as he nicke behind having made 4 giving Stott his third wicket and leaving Consett 14/3 at the end of the fourth. Cox joined Huntsman and they added 23 before Cox was caught at midwicket after toe ending a full toss in Jeffrey's first over. Southern and Remmer were to follow in the same over, both for second ball ducks giving Jeffrey a triple wicket maiden and Consett in disarray on 37/6 after 9 overs and the game seemingly gone. Huntsman and Kerswell added 30 before Huntsman was bowled by G Hebron having made an assured 33 but perished looking to up the run rate. Kerswell and Bradley then combined to put on 28 in four overs which included two sixes from Kerswell in one over the give the visitors a brief glimmer of hope but he was bowled by F Hebron off the last ball of that expensive over having made a spirited 31 off 23 balls to cap an excellent game for him. Bradley and Davison then saw out the innings as Consett closed on 106/8. At least for once we had batted the overs remarked Marshall at the end, even if it was only 20 he did have a point.

This result now sees Cosnett eliminated from both cup competitions and only league action left to play for. On this occasion some sloppy fielding and loose bowling was probably the difference but at least the team were competitive. They return to league action away at the picturesque ground of Littleton on Sunday 7th and can hopefully get back to winning ways!!
