Whiteleas v Consett & District Cricket Club Consett CC 3rd XI on Sun 07 Aug 2016 at 1:30
Consett & District Cricket Club Won by 8 wickets
Match report
Having been well beaten last time out at Boldon CA the Barmy Army were desperate to bounce back against a Whiteleas team which had produced some mixed results throughout the season and look to finish the season strongly should Kimblesworth slip up at some point and give any renewed hope of a second league title in 3 years. Boyle and Kerswell came in from the Academicals side to bolster the strength of the team. Again a Sunny day on what looked an excellent pitch but the captain by now knew better and paid no attention to his troops when upon winning the toss had no hesitation in asking the hosts to bat first.
Early inroads were made by Roe as he took the wicket of Javid with the help of a catch from Grant after he had made 6. A brief partnership of 28 followed before Aayaz became the second victim for Roe as he was clean bowled for 9. Rian however was starting to look dangerous at the other end and the sooner he could be dismissed the better. He and Khan added 36 in taking the score to 82 in which time Rian passed an excellent half century from 59 balls when hitting his second maximum. However that man Jamie Bradley was to get the crucial wicket as a top edged sweep saw him well caught at short fine leg by Kerswell after he had made an excellent 58 including 9 boundaries and 2 maximums. Captain Pathak was next up but he soon lost Khan as he became Kerswell's first victim caught at point by Cox after making 9. Pathak was looking to manipulate the field and find the gaps and looked by far the strongest player so chipping away at the other end looked to be the way forward. Singh was next to go for a duck as he was bowled by Kerswell and Arif followed 3 balls later caught behind by Ray giving Kerswell his third victim leaving the hosts 102/6. The next wicket was to prove to be the big one as Pathak played out to the offside boundary and pushed for 2, unfortunately for him he hadn't yet seen them arm of Wilkinson and a bullet like throw right over the top of the stumps saw him run out by a good 6 feet having made 27. At 117/7 the tail was now exposed and Clemments followed straight after for 1 bowled by Marshall and it wasn't long before number 9 went down as Qadir was lbw for 0 to the same bowler leaving the score at 121/9. At this point Consett somewhat switched off a little which saw an entertaining last wicket stand of 35 between Qasim 11* and Ahmed who made 26 before he was last out skying a slog off the bowling of Clarke and held by Bradley at cover.
A little debate over sloppiness at the mid way point and how the hosts had probably been allowed to score 30 or so runs too many but surely this shouldn't be too much of a problem for the strong batting unit possessed by the visitors should it?
Top opening partners set about the task with relish punishing anything lose and even running a few singles and twos for a change as they brought up 50 inside 11 overs. Whiteness rotated bowlers at regular intervals in search of a wicket but the two openers stood firm and continued to score at a healthy rate. That was of course until one such moment of hilarity for all. Bradley cut one to the point boundary but due to being 'tired' and not paying attention refused an easy single, however Karma was not his friend as he was clean bowled the very next ball by Qadir having made 39 in an excellent opening partnership of 91 with Winn across the space of 18 overs. Next up was Clarke and despite hitting his first ball for 4 he only lasted a further 5 before he was bowled by Ahmed to leave the score 100/2 after 19 overs. Overs were never going to be the issue here just wickets lost and thankfully not a single further wicket was lost as Ray and Winn knocked off the remaining 57 runs required in only 8 overs. During that time Winn passed a well deserved half century from 62 balls and hit 7 boundaries before he eventually ended up unbeaten on 64 hitting 9 boundaries in total and Ray finishing uneaten on 30 having hit 4 boundaries of his own. An excellent victory for Consett as they continued to try and put pressure on Kimblesworth at the top of the league and made this their 9th victory of the season!! Well played everyone
Man Of The Match Contenders - Matty Kerswell with 3 wickets, Jamie with a wicket and 39 runs, Mark for an excellent opening burst of 9-3-16-2, Speedy with 30 not out, However Kieran Winn is todays deserved Man Of The Match having carried his bat for an unbeaten 64 making sure his side got across the line in their pursuit of victory. Well done Kieran
Dick Of The Day - There weren't even any nominations for this one today. All previous cock ups from the day had been totally forgotten after this. Whilst looking in no trouble at all the recipient hit a ball out to the boundary, turned down the single and got bowled very next ball. This will probably be the easiest one to award all season so for that please step forward and collect your much deserved Dick Of The Day award Jamie Bradley!!
