Boldon CA v Consett & District Cricket Club Consett CC 3rd XI on Sun 31 Jul 2016 at 1:30

Match report
Consett travelled to Boldon CA in the back of a 9 game unbeaten run in the league (8 wins, one draw) hoping to make it ten games unbeaten in their continued quest for league title glory. Unavailability and injuries however meant a very rare Wilkinson father/son combo making an appearance on the field and two of the team turning up limping onto the field with football related injuries (morons).
Capatin Cox won the toss on a green looking wicket and decided bowling first was the way forward in their pursuit of victory. Opening the bowling on this occasion would be regular hand Roe and Burlinson on one of his few appearances of the season. The pair immediately settled into an immaculate line and length, Roe finding prestigious movement and Burlinson working up pace not often seen at 3rd X1 level. It wasn't long before the first wicket fell as Burlinson cleaned up Johnston, however dead ball was called as Wilkinson jr was stood at midwicket talking so the batsman was called back to the crease. Thankfully not too much damage done as he was soon to go bowled having made 18. Next to go was Daw as he was clean bowled, again by Burlinson having made 1. A few overs later Tinnion followed having made a painstaking 4 from 47 balls to become a third victim for Burlinson lbw. Captain Reay was next to follow for 10 also clean bowled by Burlinson as the hosts were left on 34/4 after 18 overs and really struggling to post a score. Burlinson finishing with excellent figures of 9-2-20-4 and the very unlucky Roe recording 9-3-14-0. Wickets continued to fall as B Johnston was bowled by Bradley for 2 before McGeary was bowled by Wilkinson also for 2 to leave the hosts 36/6 in the 20th and Consett firmly on top as Andersen came to the crease. Four overs later and it got worse for the hosts as they were reduced to 42/7 as a second wicket for Bradley caught by Wilkinson Snr at square leg saw Lincon on his way for 2. Eventually a partnership of note was to follow as the severely hungover Spencer combined to add 44 with Andersen before he became Southerns first victim having made 23 from only 22 balls. Southern was to pick up his second not long after as he bowled L Johnson for 1 leaving the score at 94/9 and the job almost done. However the start of some extremely sloppy play by Consett combined with thinking the job was already done saw Andersen open his shoulders as he passed a deserved half century from 63 balls including 3 boundaries and 2 maximums as he and last man J Johnson added 42 crucial runs for the final wicket before a catch was eventually taken by Wilkinson Jr running in from long off as Southern picked up his third wicket as Andersen went for an excellent and game changing 60 from only 65 deliveries. In the end the hosts had been restricted to 136 but the feeling was that it should have been far less given their position after 23 overs.
At tea talk was very much of Boldon CA captain and opening bowler Reay and the need to see him off as he could be the man to do the damage with his 'controversial' bowling style (it has to be seen to understand). Regular openers Bradley and Winn gave Consett an excellent start in adding 40 for the first wicket, in which Bradley had a sequence of four consecutive boundaries off the dangerous Reay. The fun was short lived however as after a run a ball 32 Bradley was beaten all ends up by a slower ball and clean bowled by Reay. Burlinson was next up and he made only 4 before becoming a second victim for Reay. More rouble was soon to follow as Winn was out to an outstanding catch at slip by Spencer as Reay now had his third wicket of the day. McGeary was next to get in on the act as he had Wilkinson Jr caught behind having made only 1 and Cosnett precariously placed on 50/4. The same over saw Marshall come and go for 4 Lbw to McGeary before Cox was caught off ready in the very next over to leave Consett in disarray on 54/6 off 15 overs knowing that this could put a huge dent in any title dreams they had. The rot stopped briefly before the usually reliable run machine Pyke was next to go for 5 caught and bowled by Daw and at 68/7 the game was almost gone. Southern followed soon after caught off the bowling off Johnston for 6 and at 70/8 it was time to only hope for any available batting points that could be gained. Grant and Wilkinson Snr batted patiently and risk free in a partnership of 27 before Grant was caught going after a short ball having been second top scorer with 15. Roe followed soon after as he was dismissed for the first time this season for 0 held well by Lincoln who had perviously looked like he couldn't even catch a cold for the rest of the day. In the end Consett were dismissed for just 98, the first time they had been bowled out all season and shown that complacency and a lack of determined mindset to work hard had ultimately cost them game they should have won with ease. A bitter pill to swallow but not yet completely out of the title race with other teams at the top yet to play each other. Hopefully a cast improvement would be achieved ready for their next outing away at Whiteleas to get their season back on track!!
Man Of The Match - Dan Burlinson - possibly the best bowling spell seen so far this season as he mixed pace and immaculate line and length to tear through the top order of Boldon CA, just a pity it had to be in a losing cause
Dick Of The Day - Simon Wilkinson - 1 run with the bat and that incident of seeing a batsman recalled to the crease as he was talking when the bowler was running. Well deserved but certainly not the only candidate on a day where most if not all of the team could have been nominated
